Hi Dave.

I see you have the metal shrouds...I had two fail on me...I think I still have them so if you need some spares then I will put them aside for the next time we meet...

Cheers Mark, that's very kind but I've long since moved on the those dreadful plug extenders as they're a well known point of failure on Chimaeras.

Here's how I solved that one once and for all...

1. Buy decent leads with plug ends that have good resistance to heat like these MSD Super Conductors

2. Buy a 6' roll of MSD Pro-Boot Guard

3. Cut the MSD Pro-Boot Guard roll into 10" lengths & fit over the plug ends, this image shows the Pro-Boot Guard part way on, when fully fitted it goes over & right up to the very end of the grey MSD plug end

4. Fit a DEI Titanium Protect-A-Boot over the whole lot with the steel ring inside the Protect-A-Boot at the plug end, only use DEI Titanium Protect-A-Boots, the cheaper woven fiberglass boots are not up to the job

5. Repeat steps 1-4 eight times

6. Crimp your coil/distributor ends, the MSD Super Conductor universal kit comes with two types of distributor ends and a basic but effective crimp die in the box. Details here:

BTW, we still need to sort my little trimming jobs mate, and I want you to do it, I'll be in touch soon my friend.

I've been running the above setup for a few years now and it's been perfect Mark.

Keep in mind the forward facing manifolds on the Chimaera present a greater challenge, they are brutal on plug ends which is why TVR used the Beru plug extenders, unfortunately these extenders are themselves an unreliable point of failure so deleting them was always my objective.

Burning LPG is super hard on ignition components because the fuel is far harder to strike than petrol, once combustion is initiated it actually burns more completely than petrol but you need a good spark with a long duration to get gas burning in the first place. LPG killed my Magnacors in short order, so I switched to MSD Super Conductor HT leads which are the absolute Mutt's Nuts. With my double heat insulation arrangement they are bullet proof in fact which is what I need, but I freely admit the whole setup was rather expensive.

My extra heat insulated MSD Super Conductor setup is of course completely unnecessary if you're just burning petrol and you have Wedge manifolds which are far kinder on the plug ends than the forward throw Chim & Griff manifolds. Quite simply what petrol drinkers should buy is a set of Bosch leads for a Range Rover, and looking back over this post I can see you've actually suggested the same. My link shows them at £25 but you seem to have found the same Bosch lead set for just £20, clearly your Googling skills are better than mine Mark bow

And lets face it, £20 for a set of 8 plug & play high quality Bosch plug leads (with a king lead included the set too).... is an absolute no-brainer mate thumbup

Dizzy cap and rotor arm from Distributor doctor.....

Roof down (not) but no photographic evidence to prove otherwise !! (Zig you fanny)

New wiper arm and blade as well.

Great day.

Had an invite to Goodwood members (chimp and Frenchie) meet but couldn't make it.

I went from Magnecors to Bosch, Powerspark and then back to Magnecors. I'm going to the States in October and aim to buy some ignition upgrades over there. MSD 6AL2 and their leads which improve things a little better than before.

Well,
Took her out again the other evening and gave her a very spirited drive. All good for a while..... Then she started to hesitate again.
As mentioned, leads,plugs,dizzy and rotor.

She was also idling very high (circa 1800) when I got home.

Any ideas ?

High rpm at idle is most often due to an air leak somewhere. Check all air hoses. May be the plenum base leaking?

As said...check for air leaks matey..High idle...when this happens check the linkage of the throttle on the plenum...it could be a sticking/failing accelerator cable...

When does it hesitate...at a particular temp or rpm?
