I had a 400SE some years ago. A 1992 J plate with engine number starting 47A.....
Also owned (although I would rather forget !) a 390SE 1985 model with engine number (if I recall correctly) ARE TVR 018.
Hope that is of some interest ! :-)
just added your two to my list and you had both the earliest and the latest i have been told of!

bloody criminal to replace an nck with an rpi! should have had the nck rebuilt if necessary (and not by rpi, i'm not a fan. je or v8d would have been better. :-)

I thought there were only 103 no 390's and 420's built (70 being 420's and 33 390's)

Jase.
i think it must be more like 125 390se cars
because going by the answers to this post (which i started to work out whether my engine , nck175 was from a 390 or a 400 se, installed in a 350 as a replacement engine bought by owner two owners previous to me from rt racing, turns out it is a 400se engine.) i have received, one member on here (chief1, see page 3 of this post) told me he has nck107, but even if that is the highest nck 390 there were andy rouse ones a.r.e *** engine numbers and a hand full of john eales engined ones J.E.*** engine numbers before nck took over production of there hundred plus or so 3905cc engines

Hi, I’m a newbie and have just bought my first TVR being a 1989 400se or so I thought. Obviously I’ve been Googling like made and came across this post. I’m interested as my wheel arch plate states engine number NCK 175!! Noting the comments here I managed to locate my engine number being 40D00** which according to Rimmers appears to be a 4.2 litre, so I’m wondering if mine is actually a 420se. Any help determining what I’ve actually git would be great.
Hi Paul, well what that means is your car must be the one my motor came out of, perhaps whoever took my motor out of your car did so in order to install a 4.2 or whatever it is you have in there. i started this thread because 4 years ago i bought my 1984 350i knowing it had an se motor but was told it was a 3905cc (390se) but thanks to all the contribution to this post (who gave numbers before and after 175 and told me what cars and years their cars were), i was able to work out that not only was mine from a 400se but that it was from a 1989 one. Now you show up and have the very car my motor came from. maybe it was knackered when removed from your car as i know it had at least a partial rebuild at V8 Developments after it was installed in my car. Anyway, great to hear from you. Hope you're enjoying your car.
By the way a lot of people have migrated from here to the face book group https://www.facebook.com/groups/TVRcars hope to see your car there. by the way what is your reg and where about are you?

Hi
Have been following this again with interest Richard Thorpe assured me at the time it was a 3905 removed from a car by themselves as the owner said it was not powerfull enough hence 3905 on log book.
when the engine died and was stripped by Ray at v8dev it was found one head was running single valve springs the other larger valves and double springs so who knows what happens to these motors
One thing for sure is i wish I still had it.
Mike b
hi mike, well r.t. was wrong (or lying) and since he sold you and installed an engine with two completely different heads, one with smaller valves and double valve springs and one with bigger valves and single springs, he clearly couldn't be trusted to tell you what cc thee engine was either. it was because it was registered as a 3905 when i bought it that i assumed the motor was from a 390se (they were made with 3905cc motors) but the whole point of this post was to work out the truth of the matter, which i did, the motor is a 3948 from a 1989 400se!
anyway, more importantly you'll be pleased to know in the 4 (nearly 5) years i have had it, i have done a huge amount of work improving it. it is now 100% reliable and very fast. i have replaced the offy 360 manifold with a dual plane edelbrock performer one, built a very special new holley for it, much improved over the one that was on there before, replaced all of thee ignition system, using far superior american made mallory unilite dizzy and msd blaster coil and msd 6al cdi box, moroso custom made leads, and completely rewired the engine electrics and fitted new fuse boxes to replace all of that melted crap that was causing all kinds of electrical problems. i spent a lot of time researching and tuning the ignition, it now runs 14 degrees intitial, and 33 all in, with 10 degrees vacuum advance, (all adjustable on the mallory) and starts INSTANTLY even if left for months, and absolutely fizzes with energy, instant response when you press the loud pedal, very addictive. oh and i built a side exit exhaust as i found the original a bit quiet ;-) if you are interested in buying it back i might consider it but doubt you would pay what i would now want to part with it. have a look at some of my vid's, not very recent i'm afraid. have a look, plenty of other vid's of the car on my channel too.
keep in touch. drak.
