Leaking tank

Sounds like you're having exactly the same problems I am on my 280i - petrol pours out when my driver's side tank is filled over 2/3 full (so I guess that's when it hits the crossover pipe and starts filling the other tank). And also my alternator light started to come on. Turned out a bearing in the alternator failed, causing the alternator to periodically jam - as I found out when smoke started to fill the cabin and the alternator belt burned itself off! Nice!

Mt previous wedge leaked around the float gasket - worth checking as it's much easier to than changing a hose / fix leaking tank.
