I'm a member of the IAM. They teach the same system of driving that the Police use.

IAM Moto - "Brakes to slow Gears to go"
Make of that what you will.
Personally in the Astra I'll stick to this but in the TVR its "Brakes to slow Gears to go, with a little bit of heal and toe" - Adds to the fun.

OK boys n girls here are the figures from TVR themselves for the 450 SE, so there cannot be much difference for the 400's etc.

1st Gear 37.06 MPH
2nd Gear 58.86 MPH
3rd Gear 87.90 MPH
4th Gear 123.06 MPH
5th Gear 155.76 MPH

This all depends on what final drive ratio you have on the back axle too as there were options on that too. So make up your own mind. Also the rev limit was not mentioned for the above in gear speeds.

I also like to say that 155.76 MPH sounds much better than 155 MPH (though I am not sure what 0.76 MPH feels like) but it makes ALL the difference.!!!!

Incidently, when using the double de-clutch method, I can full power shift up, and also change down without using the clutch at all.

A contributory factor I agree but many of the the car suddenly spun incidents I have seen on track days have been caused by engine braking either intentionally or not (driver error - been there myself I have to say).

I was assessing drivers a couple of years ago on a track day and it was amazing the number of owners that did this. I was even told by one that it made the car safer because it was more gentle as the car lurched on the wet track. I have never been so glad to get out in my life!

Well, you aint ever been in a car with me, and I do change down to get engine braking... I know you appear to have wrote the "Best Practices" book when it comes to driving, thats fine. Personally, I donot subscribe to its way of thinking or methodology.

Wouldn't mind seeing a copy of that. Are they published on the web anywhere ?

Brochure is a big square thingy with a very nice Black 400SE (no rear spoiler) as the featured car. I do not know if I can scan it because of its size. Will have a go later and email it to you if it is half decent.

NO!!! Engine braking is a No No.
1. The rear wheels can lock up because of the engine torque.
2. Clutches/transmission/Gearboxes cost a lot more than brake pads.

Ah Steve - you take the fun out of it.

As about 5% of TVRs get written off each year, mainly through accidents, I am just interested in preservation of the cars (and owners)...

If you heel and toe you can make lots of noise on the down change anyway. People then wonder how two feet do the work of three!

On driving I haven't bu many others more qualified than me have. I have a library of books that all say the same: it is not a recommended practice.

Speed Secrets by Ross Bentley is a good reference and cheap at a tenner. Chapter 3 in particular. Might want to read it at some point and see if you still disagree with the methodology.

Always heel and toe, it is much more fun, noise inducing and a bit of an art to perfect, but worth the effort. (still dont get it right 100% of the time) but having fun learning.

I still heel and toe in my everyday fwd rep mobile, which is handy on a turbo diesel at it keeps the turbo spinning in the right rev band.

I took 2nd gear to the rev-limiter today which must be about 6200 and it was just shy of 60. So I guess the gearing is original. Also got the CD changer working and gave it a work out down the back roads. Didn't jump once.
I'm still grinning
