I'm still searching for the root of my high oil pressure problem, it's either the gauge / sender, or the oil relief valve.

The favour I need is for any of you with the VDO oil gauge marked 0-5 to remove the wire from the sender and see where the needle goes. On mine it goes to the '5' end of the gauge, but I've been told it should drop to the '0' end.

Answers on a postcard....

Thanks,
Richa.

Thanks Ian

I had a feeling it ought to go that way. The garage I spoke to about it today said it should to 0, and that if it went to 5 it would be different to 95% of wedges. Will take the oil pressure relief valve to bits tomorrow night then

Rich.

When I had my engine in bits, I looked at the relief valve and applied a slight chamfer to all the edges around the bore that the valve piston moves in... it's never stuck yet! Also, Rimmmers do an uprated spring for about 3 quid that supposedly gives you another 10 psi. I get 3 bar or so at idle when cold.

You get 3 bar oil pressure at cold idle?
Isn't that something like 40psi? I only get 22 - 25psi on my wedge at cold idle (1000rpm) and about half that when hot.
Is my engine shagged?

Just to add my 2p here.
on Idle, my oil pressure is 25. when very hot, oil pressure can be as low as 15 - 20. if you rev the engine, the oil pressure pumps its way upto 50psi, and remains constant when the engine being revved.

You get 1000 rpm at cold idle? Mine's about 700. Is my engine shagged?

Actually, fast idle on startup is about 1000 rpm: it drops to 700 as she warms up. At idle when hot I get less than 1 bar oil pressure, but it's up to 2 bar by about 1800 rpm and runs about 3 bar constantly when hoofing it. Pootling in top around town is unnerving because it will drop to about idle speed, so at a quick glance you think there's no oil pressure...! Ample justification for lots of revs/ noise/ wheelspin/ Maxxtwat bashing...

But to answer your question: your oil sounds OK to me... Ah, but then there's those worn crank bearings... and that leaky gasket...
Spend some money; go on, you know you want to...
