I knew about the fireman's death, but didn't think it could be spun this far. Rough area, yes, would I park my car there, NO, but the hottest car in the UK area, mmmmmm

Cardiff borough is UK car arson capital

A DEPRIVED city estate has been named as one of the worst areas for car arson in the UK.

Last year 250 cars were deliberately set on fire in Ely, Cardiff.

Des Mason, from the South Wales Fire Service Arson Reduction Team, said: "Young hooligans get liquid propane gas, which is lying around, and set it on fire in one of these abandoned cars.

"When firefighters arrive at the scene they are not only facing the fumes and heat coming off the car but also the possibility of one of these canisters exploding with deadly results."

Firefighter Richard Jenkins was killed when a gas canister exploded when he entered a burning community centre known as The Green Hut in Bishopston Road in Caerau, Ely.

Two weeks ago, Jamie Evans, 20, and Christopher Raisis, 25, were jailed for 10 years after they were found guilty of starting the blaze that killed Mr Jenkins.

Councillor Jacqui Gasson, who has been the local ward member for Caerau for 17 years, said:
"The high rate of arson in the area is one of the reasons why we've had an arson reduction centre built in Ely fire station. It is an attempt to tackle the problems of fire setting in the area.
"These kids seem to have fun setting fire to cars but they don't seem to realise the dangers that they are causing. They're deficient in education and parenting."
It is now hoped the new arson education centre will reduce the number of deliberately-started fires in the area.

My grandfather always taught me to fight fire with fire. No wonder they threw him out of the fire brigade.
