My wife and I are keen to spend the first 4 days of August in Wales doing some touring and staying in B&Bs, so I'm hoping for recommendations for routes and places to stay please.

I'll be driving a classic Merc so am after nice drives with fantastic views rather than necessarily hooning around fast roads. Recognising that it's peak season and that traffic is likely to be heavy, I rather imagined heading from Gloucestershire into Pembrokeshire on day 1, and then roughly following the coast Northwards perhaps as far as Harlech (for old times sake) and then doing a loop back South through the mountains. My daughter has just finished studying at Bangor, so I'm not really bothered about doing the North coast as part of this trip.

In terms of accommodation, and noting that much will already be booked-up, we like nice B&Bs and small friendly hotels, so any recommendations would be very welcome, especially if you know they'll have vacancies over the period 01-04 August.

Any thoughts and top-tips gratefully received.

Hi,if your coming up through Wales as far as Harlech and after scenic routes I would take the route Aberystwyth,Machynlleth,Dolgellau,Barmouth Harlech,no shortage of B&B pubs etc.Shame not to take in the Nant Peris Pass travelling a little further north Blaenau Ffestiniog,Betty's-Y-Coed,Capel Curig,Llanberis (Nant Peris Pass) Caernarfon,May sound like a hike but actually a leisurely drive.If you have the time from Caernarfon travel down the Lleyn Peninsula selection of routes Nefyn,Abersoch,Pwllheli,Cricceth,Porthmadog.Enjoy Wales.Regards Baz

Many thanks Baz. I'll take a look at that on a map to try and get a better feel for it. Are there are any particular B&Bs you'd recommend?

There are many, many fabulous roads, so even if you get a bit lost, it doesn't matter terribly.

I don't know whether this will fit with any other suggestions you get....

Evo triangle

Also, A49 --> A489 --> A490 --> A5. Or reverse, of course.

Take a tent and a case of wine in case of emergencies biggrin

Sorry can't really recommend any B&B,s cos we use the camper van when having trips away (we actually live on the N Wales coast) what I would say any of the afore mentioned towns on the route would make a good night out.We like Barmouth,Caernarfon,Porthmadog.Regards Baz

Just to say thanks for the steers, both here and elsewhere. Got home today after a really enjoyable few days away in Wales. Great driving roads, lovely views, and a couple of really good restaurants with rooms that we ate and stayed in. If only the sun shone a bit more!

Thanks again for the tips, much appreciated. It's a lovely part of the world.
