Does anyone know if anything has changed regarding opening a US bank account whilst living in the UK. I'm considering opening one and am over there in a couple of weeks. Can I still turn up with my passport/other ID and open one? Not after anything special, just something to pay into and withdraw what's in there.

Didn't bother in the end, didn't even look into it. Will consider again next time I'm over but have no plans at the moment.

I transferred my UK banking to HSBC 4 months before I left the country, this helped getting a US HSBC account set up. They are generally a terrible bank in terms of customer service etc in the U.S and they only really exist in California and New York these days. I am now moving to Chase having lived here for 3 and a bit years and established a credit card relationship with them. That's my two cents!

I tried to start using HSBC 18 months or so before coming over here however my local branch were so st and their online banking was a pain I said fk it and sorted myself out. Personal us account set up 1 year before coming. Amex moved over the day I received my SSN. 2 further credit cards acquired and using in the first 2 months. Have an average credit score after just under 2 months. Slowly increasing since.

Chase require something with a US address on it. Bank of America don't (not in L.A at least. Just had a friend arrive, visitor status and walked in to open with both. BOA had no problem, just gave them his European passport and got his debit car on the spot.

I can help with this. I came to the US 8 years ago with no credit history, now have personal and business bank accounts.
The easiest way is to open a UK HSBC account. Ideally, you should have a current account, credit card and take out a small loan. This is the fastest way to build a UK history. Then open a US Premier account here in the US. Building a credit history can be quite quick depending on how you do it. I would be happy to set up a call with my Premier Account Manager here in NYC. She will be able to get you started. Once you have done this US banks like Chase are no problem.
