I'm working in Syracuse at the mo, although my Griff 500's safely tucked up in my garage back home!
The roads around here would be great for hooning in the spring and summer, but terrible in the winter. "Lake effect snow" is a phrase you'll come to despise - they get 240 inches of snow a year on average, and it seems to snow every night from December through to April! They plough the roads quickly, but there's loads of salt about and the surface is extremely poor.
The main thing I've noticed is just how empty the place is. Get a few miles out of the city and you'll be on fantastic deserted roads, especially if you drive an hour or so out to the Catskills or Adirondacks. The general standard of driving is poorer than in Europe, but everyone's travelling a lot slower; you'll have a field day overtaking in anything remotely quick!

Dont think ther'll be much hooning to be had.
I did my best to hire a 2005 V* mustang but none of the companies would rent one that late in the year cos of snow...wimps
I spose I could try and borrow my brother-in-laws 66 stang but he might be a tad wary....i scared the hell out of him in the marcos when he came over earlier this year. Muwuhahah

In Michigan we have 4 Great Lakes and get a lot of Lake effect snow. You will learn what a shovel is for. Most US vehicles are respectable in snow because they fit all season tyres to just about everything. Including the latest Mustangs.
If you are in the US it is good to at least have a period of Muscle Car ownership. I would liken the latest Mustang to a big Group 4 Escort that has been well sorted. Try one. I can get you discount on it too.
The most important thing to remember when driving is to keep a bag of seriously warm clothing in the car. If the car breaks and you are wearing a business suit you will not survive if your car breaks down at 5 Farenheit. In Michigan we see reports of lunacy all winter and a few that perish because of their lack of preparedness.
Syracuse is in a death match with Rochester for the worst weather in the known world. If your not into sunshine you may love it there since there is less sunshine than anywhere. Excellent place to see the effect of corrosion on cars. Be sure to visit Fulton nearby Oswego County. The summer would be okay if the lakes weren't polluted. Be sure to swim in Lake Onondaga. Expect to pay high NY State taxes with low or no social benefits. Take a trip to Albany to see where all your money is going. Your are quite lucky since the economy has been going downhill since sometime in the 1960's. Take a trip to Charlotte NC to see the corporate headquarters that used to be in upstate NY. Have fun in Syracuse its an experience of a lifetime like visiting Mongolia.

The area around the finger lakes is absoutely beatiful in the summer. However the winters suck big time. Syracuse normally recieves between 140 and 200 inches of snow each winter! If you head north about 20 to 30 miles you will find winter to be much more harsh with snow totals substantially higher!
If you are looking for a place to purchase a home stay away from CAmillus, a suburb of Syracuse, I have owned three homes around Syracuse and one of these was in Camillus, I left NY in 2001 due to the high taxes, they raised the taxes on my home from $7,600/yr to well over $8,000/yr. This was more than my mortguage payments! Other areas are much more reasonalbe for taxes.
Summer in NY for automobile lovers is supurb! There are cruise nights all around the area every night of the week and usually several choices each night. ON the weekends there are usually 2 to 3 car shows to choose from within an hour drive of Syracuse. Cruise nights run from a small one of about 10 cars to the Guptals show in Albany, NY with over 2000 cars. The Syracuse Nationals held each year is one of the largest car shows held on the east coast with over 7,000 registered cars showing up.
THe state fair grounds are in Syracuse and this is where the Syracuse Nationals are held. There are numurous dirt race tracks surround the area with the national DIRT racing headquarters 20 miles west in Weedsport, NY. Wakins Glenn is about 2 hours south west. 3.56 mile road course that is set in the hills of the finger lakes. Very beatiful area and plenty of racing action through the whole summer.
I have lived and traveled all over the US for over 30 years and of all the ares in the US the central NY area is my favorite, in the summer. The winters are just plain awful though. it can get very cold, well below 0-F and stay that way for days. Fall is beautiful with apple orchards all around the area and festivals of all sorts.
My partners are still in the area and I travel there several times a year. I try to make it to the vintage weekend at Watkins Glenn and the Syracuse Nationals. This year I will be bringing my Ultima GTR. Last two years I we brought the 71 Camaro.
