Planning a last visit to the USA arr San Francisco to do the tranport systems then take in the following Raiway Museums Sacramento, St Louis,Green Bay, Baltimore,( and the Aircraft Museum at Washington), Scranton, Strasburg,Montreal then Home
Would love to revisit the ACD museum but ,just too far out of range!
Reading the trip reports on the motels, many of them seem to come with free cockroaches and other assorted wildlife!! even in the region of 100 dollars plus a night
As i will be spending 2 nights in SFO and possibly two nights around the Scranton /Strasburg area,( starting and finishing in Washington) plus a night each in St Louis and Milwaukee/Green Bay, what would you in the US call, what we over here know as Bed and Breakfast places. These are usually family run homes that cater for a few singles or families rather than the Motel chain. Every time i enter a variation in google or b+b and small guest houses, it always takes me to the large chain web or booking sites for motels/hotels.
surely there are places like this about, thinking mainly of better hygiene in bedding and bathroom than costs, although in UK there isnt much diffrenece in price! but a world of difference in hospitality
I expct iwill be using Southwest Airlines for the between cities travel bit, with a car at each airport, and the Porter for the Washington-Montreal leg. Are these as bad as Ryanair over here, the Southwest wannagoe prices appear good value.

Thanks

I've never used it myself, but this has a few reviews and places

You want the equivalent of Alastar Sawdays for USA. I'm not sure one exists though.
Trip advisor with the town in the search will also get you an array of accommodation choices.

I'm in the middle of planning a 3 week stay in the US too. I prefer to stay in good B&Bs and have found the best way is to sort out a basic route, knowing approx where the overnights are going to be, then use search engine to see what B&B's are in the area using the town name first. I did this for a Canadian trip 5 years ago only staying in 19C houses and only one was not up to a good standard and that was in the only major city we stayed in (Toronto).

For this trip I've booked a place in Boston for 3 nights then Warner in New Hampshire for another 3 while we go to see the NASCAR race. But also looked at and have a short list of B&Bs for Seattle / Washington and New York but can't book them 'til I know which NFL game we can get tickets for.
