Lots & lots of re-surfacing around the Emmer Green, Sonning Common, Wallingford area right now. This is obviously a good thing... but... all the roads are being done at the same time.

Now, I seem to remember in the good old days that when roads were resurfaced a bunch of filthy blokes put hot tarmac down. Sorted. Now it seems to be a zillion loose stones that would rather fly through the air & hit my windscreen (and me yesterday), especially from oncoming traffic travelling at the signed '10' mph (ie 50)

Grrrrrrr

Same here - Why do it all at the same time!

It just means that, no matter where you go, you end up stuck in a queue!

Ed - managed to get 2 stone chips at the same time on the road past Greys Court.

That road is an utter disgrace and actually prompted me to write to the council last time - riding an R1 on it with those rippled corners is bloody scary I can tell you.

No doubt we'll have a downpoor at the weekend and half of it will get washed away.

Why don't they do the job properly and resurface it instead of the crappy 'dressing' that gets put down every flippin year.

or every six months on the north approach to Henley, used to drive me insane as no matter how slow you drive, some idiot will be driving in the opposite direction at 30mph.

The reason why it doesn't get surfaced properly is that the council budgets are annual. A proper surface that will last 10 years won't fit into the yearly budget, but a crappy surface every year does.

Bugger.

So.... it's all down to annual council budgets. How wonderful. Wouldnt mind so much if people stuck to low speeds.. but the old Golf's been out of action for last few days (suspension now fixed glad to report). So each time a speeding 4WD approaches the 500, my heart is in my mouth. Awful.

Yesterday travelling back from Wallingford (annual haircut) with roof off.. was crossing fingers that rain would hold off. Boy oh boy did it not. Came down with such force I could hear it hitting the car like bullets. So.. dilemma.. carry on & try to remain dry-ish.. or pull over, play it safe, and get soaked whilst putting roof on. Took option 1. Then aquaplaned 30 yards.. plus couldnt really see the road. Stopped. drenched in 10 secs. Had to strip off in car as really, really soaked through. It is summer, right?

The same rubbish can be found all over Oxfordshire. Where I used to live they sufaced like this then resurfaced 2 years later. Useless idiots!! AS i have mentioned in a previous thread they missed out the area where a speed camera was sighted as it would dick about with the calibration....

Picked up a nice star on my windscreen this morning - fortunately not on the Lotus.

Does top dressing really extend the life of the roads?

I think it's South Oxon being cheap, the Henley-Wargrave road has just been re-surfaced properly (Berkshire) - nice and smooth

The lines by the Sonning Commmon GATSO are still missing a fortight on.. so presumably we can all whizz past it at 100mph ?!?!
