For the northern section maybe.
The "M25 to Solent" strategy says they'll be upgrading J9 to J14 to smart motorway from 2019 to 2022

Well now it's finished I hope they can find some "Smart" operators!

I went from J4 to J2 today at around 15.00, and just past J3 there was a gantry showing a 50 limit and a "Queue Ahead", so wasn't surprised to find the next gantry showed a 40 limit. But the next 2 displayed a 60 limit - and there was no obstruction or lane closure anywhere!

Although a lower limit just before J2 might have been a good idea, seeing as the queue onto the slip road for the anti-clockwise M25 was backing up onto the M3! banghead

But that was only because whoever operates these limits had backed up the M25 from J12 to J11 by imposing lower limits on it, like they do every day! They even managed to do it on Xmas day at around 12.00.

They'll never be smart motorways all the time they are operated by morons! banghead

Aren't the temporary speed limits put in place by clever software utilising live traffic data from sensors within the road surface?
I thought that's what all the (significantly over-running) full night closures for "testing and calibration" were about?

I have to say, despite all the whinging on here, my commute up the M3 and other trips using it have been significantly improved since it reopened. I remember the days before the road works, the terrible traffic problems from junction 4a north every single day, delays of hours and hours.

I've used it a lot recently and it is brilliant.

Agree, it's hugely better.

I had a special treat on 3 January - the M3 from J4 to J2 was clear, and then the morons tasked with backing-up the M25 from J12 to J11 must have had a day off because it was NSL all the way! thumbup

And for the first time in over 3 years there was no "queue - caution" nonsense! laugh

Oh great. More night time closures while they fix the dot matrix signs.

Anyone else have it where there will be a row of gantries saying 40 so everyone slows down accordingly, then the next row is back to NSL and there was absolutely nothing of concern? Happens to me loads at the minute. Though, like others have said, it's hugely improved from the old days.

All the time...

Currently working a job in Lightwater, so I'm often running between Jct 4 & 3.

If anyone sees a little white Combo van in the nearside lane undertaking everyone, give us a wave.

Yes, often approaching J3 South in the evening. Lots of urgent braking from 70 to 40 as the matrix sign comes into focus. Sometimes justified if the exit lane is slow, but other times for no reason. What would be safer would be 70 to 60 to 50 to 40. You think the control room could manage that

Just came up from the M25 to Junction 4, overnight closure of lanes 1 and 2 were being implemented, there was a 40 limit and red "x"s on lanes 1 and 2.
I was in lane three doing 40, "white van man" undertook me in lane 2, doing somewhere close to 70, please tell me the tt is going to get something nasty in the post?

Did you see any flashes? Someone in the know has said only one camera is live on the M3 at the moment, so the chances are not.

There is a report of someone receiving a NIP for 97 from one of the cameras between J3 and J4 so presumably the live one is along there.

Closed again last night.

Ridiculous. My journey home took longer at 2am than it did at 6pm the previous day!

Somebody has engineered themselves a job for life out of this stretch of road.

You have got to be fking kidding me?
What the giddy great galloping fk are they doing to it now?
Polishing the cats eyes? Straightening the white lines?
Its way beyond a joke now. It's as if the use of it by public traffic is a complete after thought and seen as largely incidental.
