Clean Air Zone for Leeds, the process has begun.

Looks like there will be a Clean Air Zone in Leeds by 2020.

They do have a choice - they could actually spend some time and money re/designing the transport network around Leeds to include the rephrasing of traffic lights and redesigning road layouts to increase traffic flow.
They have exacerbated the air pollution problem by causing unnecessary bottlenecks due to far too many traffic lights and roundabouts, but they are looking for an easy answer to solve the problems they made.
And don't even get me started on the benefits a metro/light rail system would deliver...
Typical public sector mentality unfortunately. These people wouldn't last 5 mins in jobs in the real world, or 2 mins in any company run by me.

It isn't fog.
I don't remember it, but we used to have two railway stations, so you had all the smoke from the Locos and the huge filthy mills (one in particular) which were upwind of Leeds, it was so bad in the centre they had people walking in front of the trams or trolley busses to guide them.
What I do remember as a kid was The Queens hotel being black, when it was cleaned it was amazing to see it was actually made from Portland stone which is almost white.
Compared to back then you're practically breathing fresh air

True, but NO2 is invisible. And worry more about the particles that you can't see. It isn't fog.

It will be interesting to learn how big the zone will be and what will be allowed in without a fee.
Wonder if alot of the expensive metal that poses around will still go into the town or start going to outer areas, increasing the out of town business further.
It will be nice to get rid of all those nasty diesel buses once and for all though.
Very unpleasant memories of waiting ages for buses with space and getting a massive plume of black fog every time they set off. So filthy.

I agree. I doubt it will change the habits of expensive metal. It's the buses, delivery trucks, cabs, and people with older cars commuting in etc that will get hit first?Wonder if alot of the expensive metal that poses around will still go into the town or start going to outer areas, increasing the out of town business further.

Get rid of the stupid bus lanes, and 2+ lanes and congestion, and therefore pollution would be reduce overnight.......
The 2+ lane from the M606 onto the M62 hasn't been active for quite a while now.They are allowing all traffic to use it, which should have been the case from day one!
