£35 for 2 drinks at Pennyhill Park, that came as a bit of a shock!

With 3 kids under 6 such things are not even a remote possibility. Not the £ but they would hate it so therefore would we Plus they wouldn’t eat anything on the menu.

We got a babysitter.

Last time I took a kid to a posh place they weren't on solids or only just. And they just sat and ate breadsticks/milk, they are now 6 and 8.
We've taken them to 15 in Cornwall but they had a kids menu which pleasingly wasn't junk/kids food and they scoffed the lot.

Ours enjoy TGI/Harry Ramsden also traditional pubs where they can play - else forget about it.

Also I’ve got used to 11:30am eating - loads of space and the kids can relax unlike evening annoying other guests.

I think we are going off topic a bit!

Mine like Wildwood (there is one in Camberley) the full on playroom/cinema and candyfloss machine probably swing it. The food is ok for a high street chain, prices are acceptable.

The Pineapple @ Brimpton. Near AWE.

I believe this is the oldest remaining Pub in the UK, and is mentioned in the Doomsday book.
Not been there in a few years now but it was always very "Cosy".

Not the oldest, that's the Trip in Nottingham, actually partly a cave.

This'll help make L'Ortolan more affordable if anyone on this thread wants to splash out!

The French Horn at Sonning. Proper old skool French cuisine with commensurate service. Duck spit roasting on the open fire in the bar. Expensive. worth it for a one off treat. Right on the Thames river bank too.

Hahaha! Yep, I know, it's shameful. However, as a poor 20-something lad trying to make ends meet - eating out with leftover money for a tank of 99RON on the way home - this one makes sense! (;

Just to set expectations, you'll be lucky to walk away with a bill under £200.
So, you get £50 off (the food, not the booze) but you'll spend more anyway.

Have fun, it's a lovely place.

Quick update - went to the Dewpond last night (www.dewpond.co.uk) in Old Burghclere near Newbury. In the middle of nowhere, small country restuarant with approx 15 tables - not open Monday's i found out, but was pretty quiet last night, advisable to book though

3 course menu is £36.00 per person and a great choice of dishes in every course. A couple of the dishes had small supplements but nothing silly.

Food was very good, well presented, "michelin/modern" style probably the best way to descibe it - clean and attractive.

Small dish of appetizers on the table to start with, nuts, cheese breadsticks and olives while you ponder the menu. Warm bread rolls served as well.

I started with the Pork, Duck and Grouse Terrine, followed by Roedeer and Caramel Parfait to finish. The wife had Oak Smoked Salmon, Rack of Lamb and Chocolate Sensation. We finished with coffees that came with a choc truffle and a macaroon. Couple of G&T's, a beer and a diet coke and the bill came to a very reasonable £109.

Came away nicely "stuffed" - both of us enjoyed it and will go back again to sample some of the other dishes.

A recommendation from me for others in the area

It all depends on what yardstick you use to measure it. smile
Do you take the age of a given pub from when the current building was built or when the earliest reference to it dates from?

The Trip claims to be from 1189. The Domesday Book was completed in 1086.
The Royal Standard of England at Forty Green is claimed to be from that time
If you believe the sign The Porch House at Stow-on-the-Wold is in the running.
However the Guinness Book of Records lists Ye Old Fighting Cocks in St Albans as the oldest.

Great - but are any of those anywhere near Basingstoke FFS?

Maybe a new thread for oldest Inn might be a plan! laugh
