Been looking at Guildford a lot myself lately. Went for a long walk with the Mrs a few weeks back, did a few viewings (blew them all off actually) and learned a hell of a lot. You'll learn more walking around for a few hours than a few weeks browsing Rightmove. I made this map. Might rile a few people up but it's just one man's opinion.

Also looked at Godalming loads 4 years ago and had a refresh again recently. Really nice town, very quiet. You'll get aircraft but nothing like here (directly under final approach into LHR Southern runaway, 5 miles out). Nice pubs, bit of social scene, but probably very cliquey I'd guess. Not a lot for kids to do once they get beyond playgroups. £380k will probably only get you into Farncombe though which is the more council end of the town.

Guildford's nice enough, reminds me of Chichester where I grew up. Lots to do at all ages, but definitely a town of two halves. North of the A3 is mostly council and ex-council estates and old military billets, except for the QE Park area which is nice but feels a bit like Legoland and gives the impression of one of those UAE expat enclaves where all the westerners live in wealthy comfort while the locals slum it out beyond the fence. Living there may be different but that's the walk-through impression. If kids are a thing you'll need to be in Onslow or Burpham/Merrow for a decent (on paper) state school. North of the A3 it's special schools for special children and that's about it. Again, reality may be different.

Traffic is hell. Don't go anywhere near the A3 between 0700-0800 or 1600-1900. If most of your journeys are north out, south in, then you need Jacobs Well, Merrow, Burpham. If you're heading the other way, then its Onslow. Beware the area around Slyfield, there's an abbatoir there which - I've heard - stinks if the wind is wrong.
Stench of death, LOVE It!

I remeber dry heaving on the forecort of the audi dealership and having to leave!

It's a long walk to the station from there and if the sound of planes is annoying then demolitions and trades will be even more annoying biggrin

I lived just outside Dorking for 2 years and I don't remember any aircraft noise.

More the constant rumble of the M25 despite it being behind the North Downs.

Moved back to London, wish I hadn't.

Still looking to move back. More for your money in Cranleigh but then it's a bus ride to Guildford Station and I suspect it's a long one.

Funny that aircraft noise comes up, TBH I've never even noticed it, maybe it's just not something that bothers me, hence not noticing.

I've lived in Godalming for four years, hardly notice any aircraft noise at all, even pre-plague. It's a really nice place, not too quiet but it is quiet. Plenty of nice pubs (The Star, The Richmond Arms, The Red Lion, The Cricketers, The Inn on the Lake, The Refectory) and enough restaurants that you don't really need to travel into Guildford unless you want to, and then, if you do, it's about 6 or 7 minutes from Godalming or about 5 from Farncombe.

Traffic can be bad at rush hour along Flambard Way and Bridge Road, but other than that it's usually fine- although that's pre-plague levels.

My only gripe is that there's only one supermarket, Sainsbury's, and if you want Tesco you have to head up the A3 (gah!) and into Guildford.

Surrey Hills, South Downs, and the South Coast within easy reach, ~45 minute train ride into London Waterloo.

'Generally' speaking
Burpham/Merrow/Pewley Down and Warricks Bench are good and going out of Guildford on the old Farnham Road or Portsmouth road.

If you look at the A3 so it is running South -> North - I would not buy anything on the Left. I would not consider Woodbridge/Stoughton/Park Barn or Bellfields.

I am sure that some people will say they are OK but do your research - I would join Guildford FB groups and look at crime stats to get a better feel if you don't know the area. smile

I really like Godalming but I do not know it in detail - I lived in Guildford for 12 years and my son went to school there. I do have friends on Cypress Road. You definitely need to 'drive' it via Google Street View!

Traffic is an absolute f*c*ing nightmare due to the fact that the 3 junctions for Guildford you cannot go North AND South from any of them so if you are going the 'wrong' way for the nearest junction you are forced to go through the town. (Designed by a yoghurt knitting cyclist).

I've policed there for nearly 20 years and what is posted above is pretty much spot on biggrin
