Mickelham bends actually has a hidden tree mounted camera I got caught by it last year! Not sure how often the turn it on but it got me fair & square & rewarded me with 3 points on my licence!
Expand on that...

Hidden?

Got done last year the camera angle was so high the camera must be mounted in a tree or platform hidden behind one! Its not visible from the road! But it does not always seem to be powered on......then one day got a NIP & took the points even though I doubt I was exceeding the average speed check limit (only a few mph over as well not excessive at all)!

Did you get the ticket travelling northbound or southbound ?

There was mention of a fixed camera in addition to the average speed cameras in the "New Speed Camera's On The A24 Mickleham Bends" thread a page or so back.I assumed it was the old Gatso on the southbound carriageway just before it opens up to 2 lanes.

I drove down there a few weeks back but didn't spot anything. Predictably ended up in a short queue behind someone doing just under 40 on the single carriage section. Whilst it was a relief when it opened up to 2 lanes and we could all pass it was tempered by the frustration of watching the speedo to keep to the average ! Quite different to the 1980's when I used to go down there on the bike wink

Northbound I think as was heading back to London when they took the picture the images are long gone now cannot view them online anymore did not take a backup as so shocked at the time to receive a NIP for this! Its one of 2 places I can think of. Place 1 is just before the average speed check camera before you reach the roundabout going southbound & place 2 is the opposite side going north just before the Esso station where you see the average speed check 3 camera rigs. Now the angle was so high (40-50ft I reckon) I can only think they have it placed in a very elevated position probably with a solar panel nearby for power. Since then I never exceeded the average speed limit. Think they have several cameras to check the average speed at certain points is within limits (to stop people blasting away then slowing right down at the last section for instance to maintain the average speed).

So pathetic they chose to do this also as the road is pretty safe...they should do way more instead to stop the cyclists & motorcyclists who think its funny to hog this road & prevent others legally over taking safely...!!

Yep, in my younger days I'd have some brilliant roads in Hertfordshire to drive in my 205 GTI. These days most have cameras or traffic calming. At least I got to enjoy them before councils sucked the life out of them.

Pirbright is still 'available'.... wink

Roadworks all over the bends for the past 4 weeks but no cameras or equipment.

Can't wait for them to put them up so I can devise a route with U turns / double backs to evade them.

It will just push spirited driving elsewhere, given the vast majority of accidents on this stretch are "single vehicle" ones - it's not the speed that's the issue, it's the inability to drive to conditions. It's a lovely stretch of road that I used to enjoy on my push bike and in my car.

£125k FFS. Most people have slowed down just due to the signs anyway.

When I was growing up near Pirbright, we always used to call them the Brookwood Bends. I'm assuming it's the same stretch of road running from Brookwood/Pirbright under the railway arch and then on to Frimley Green.

First camera has appeared at the first left / right where the golf course used to be, from the Pirbright end. Very small on a tall post. Was in place last week.

Exercised the engine on there last night. No cameras at the other ends yet but a ton of yellow arrow warning signs on many/most of the corners has appeared.

I cycled the bends last night an not a single camera seen, thought I saw a yellow sign on a tree but was too quick. I will be driving around there this weekend for some fun so will have a recce. If anyone wants to join me for some bends fun and a pint let me know smile

Just sat in Pirbright at pub having done the bends. No camera seen... where is it then?

Going back via the long national as haven't done that yet... the golf club looked clear by the railway.

That's authority's intention - driving (or riding) should not be pleasurable any longer frown

Thought I was being too cynical but now the evidence is overwhelmingly anti-private transport. Unfortunately the future is bleak for enthusiasts.

Too many victims, too many opinions, too many elderly and infirm to point to. There's a stark absence of common sense and leadership, I hate what decisions such as this l, which are seemingly irreversible say about our country and the direction in which our society is headed.

Feels like the death throes of an old friend. Time to realise the inevitable and humanely prevent further suffering. Suffocation using a pillow should do the trick.

Some time ago, I reached the conclusion that full autonomy is unavoidable. Driving can no longer be justified or tolerated. Bring it on with haste...

From the Brookwood / Pirbright end, houses on the left, train tracks on the right, there is a tall, narrow pole on the left before the first left curve after the houses with two camera pods on. Proper small and easily missed.
