Ford Focus smoking issue **Help please!!**

Hi all,

I bought a 2006 Ford Focus 1.8L from a private seller in May, from day 1 the car has had problems, it had just been MOT'd and apparently serviced but no paperwork for the service.

Long story short the car produces ALOT of blue smoke when accelerating. It also drinks oil, my boyfriend did an oil change and oil filter change as we were worried it had the wrong oil in replaced with good quality oil, a month later my oil light came on so the car had used 4L of oil.

I have had a look on a couple of websites and this forum and there is a suggestion of stem seal valves being an issue.

My question is has anyone had these replaced at a garage or could suggest a price for them as I do not want to spend a lot of money on the car or shall I just cut my losses and sell for spares and repairs? Other than this smoking issue which I am assuming is burnt oil the car seems to be in good condition.

Blowing valve stem seals usually results in a little blueish smoke and slow use of oil - not a massive ammount like you describe.
Sorry to say it's more likely to be stuck oil control (piston) rings which means major expensive engine surgery.
You could try a paraffin engine flush to maybe unstick the rings (fill 50% oil, 50% household paraffin, run at idle for 10 mins. Drain & repeat)
You could also pull each spark plug - chances are one of them will be very oily.

Another option might be to fill it with a heavy oil like 20W/50 and sell the thing quick...but that would be bad m'kay.

Thank you for your reply, I think you are right with the piston rings. Someone has offered me £300, I might just take it. Someone sold it to me like that and I would feel bad doing it to someone else and the fear of karma.

I would replace the pcv valve and check the pipework for blockages as this can cause oil usage issues. Also worth doing an extended oil flush with forte engine flush. The duratec he is known to use oil if its oil changes have been neglected as the oil control ring gum up with deposits.
