Just bought a Jan 2017 SMax Vignale 210ps pimp mobile.

Last week, I updated Sync 3 to version 3.0 using USB stick, straightforward as long as you research the process on the web.

Pretty disappointed when I checked the map version after update and saw it was still at EU 04/14. 4 year old maps in a 14 month old car!

Had the usual dealer says "Speak to Ford CS" & when you do, Ford CS says "Speak to dealer".

I asked Ford CS why it was impossible for them to get a release date schedule from the Technical Department working on mapping. Answer was "...we have the information about updates - There is no information" Some Customer Service!

I have given up on Sync 3 navigation & am using Apple Maps via Apple Car Play. Was a bit reluctant as Apple Maps had a bad rep but latest version on IOS 11 is okay imo, with up to date maps and live traffic. It's quite neat to have iPhone looking interface for phone / texts & music plus Spotify. I read that map date is drawn from "TomTom & others."

Drawbacks with Apple Maps are:
a) No way to add multiple waypoints, (other than a divert to preset categories of stop, eg Fuel / Restaurants etc.)
b) If you lose mobile signal it only holds data along an already planned and active route. If you make a major detour out of signal , it won't have new routing information until you pick up a mobile signal again. If you drive in areas with good mobile coverage this cease to be an issue.

I did try using a slave Android phone to be left permanently in the car connected by usb cable so I could use Android Auto / Google Maps. Problem was that it stopped bluetooth connection of my iPhone which is my everyday mobile. Sync 3 allows two phones to use the system BUT only using Bluetooth and not when using Android Auto. Also, map screen with Google Maps was a bit washed out, Apple Maps has stronger colours and is clearer in use.

I may reconsider when Sync 3 maps get updated or if Waze appears on Sync 3 as promised.
Hi Forestier

I also have the same pimp mobile.....lol

I have just updated Sync and it says v 3, build 18025. Is yours the same? The website still seems to want to point me towards the same update... Have you found the same problem?

My maps are also 04/14, which I agree is crazy on a car which is a new year and half old. It has not even got on any of the local new roads. My tomtom which I use for holidays etc even has roads which have not even been built yet! lol

i think if you use Apple, you can use Waze with Sync 3, which IMHO is far better than any other Sat Nav i have used...

Cheers.

Does anyone think there could be any warranty issues with doing this?

Cheers in advance...

Just managed to successfully update my SMax Vignale to F7, (2017), maps as per instructions on:
https://s550.guru/how-to-update-ford-sync-3-europe...
It took a fair few goes to get it to work, a combination of a stupid mistake on my part and then repeated errors.
After starting from scratch & repeating every step, today it worked so I no longer have 4 year old maps.
My posts on S550 website, (link above), explain the detail and are posted under ‘Ian Wood’.
Really pleased it finally worked!
Why can’t Ford give us the ability to do this update?
Love the car but, at least on Navigation Updates, Ford suck!

Typical! After all the effort of getting the F7 version on Sync 3 map Google Maps comes to Apple Carplay!

I stopped using Carplay earlier this year as Apple Maps were a dissapointment on a long touring drive in Spain & Portugal.

For those Iphone using SMax owners that haven’t picked up on this Apple recently an IOS 12 update.

I had seen rumours that Apple would, for the first time, allow third party map apps to run under Carplay.

I had also read that, for this to work, Google & Waze needed to release new versions of their apps.

I updated to IOS 12 but no sign of a new Google Maps release. I searched the net but no sign of a predicted release date.

Then, a few days later, an updated Google Maps appeared on the app store!

Plugged iPhone into car USB and enabled Carplay under Sync 3 settings.

Carplay screen appears with Apple Maps icon on home screen BUT swipe to second screen and you have Google Maps!
(You can move Google Maps to home screen & Apple Maps to second screen).

This seems to excite me more than it should, I need to get out more!!

Are the vehicles picky over memory stick? Tried 2 different USB3 memory sticks and both instantly bring up a USB error message when plugged in.

Formatted to exFAT, re downloaded, re copied et... But still getting an instant USB error when plugged in.

Android auto works fine in the USB ports, so they must be OK...?

Have you got any other devices plugged in to a USB port when trying to update?
Although I didn’t have any trouble updating the map to version F7 (did it today) I did have problems doing a previous update (Sync 2.2 to Sync 3.0) with lots of disc errors.
It turned out to be a problem with unzipping the files. I’m on a Mac so that probably didn’t help. Although the built in macOS Unarchiver Utility appeared to unzip the files the car kept throwing up disc errors when I plugged in the usb stick. The solution was to download and use StuffIt Expander to expand the file. After that everything went as it should with the Sync 3 update.
Oddly though, when I downloaded the F7 map update at the weekend StuffIt threw up errors when trying to unzip the 22gb download. I had to download and use the Mac version of WinZip and then everything went as it should (takes about an hour and a quarter to do the map update).
Maybe you could try using a different utility to expand the zip file as it seems like it can make the difference between success or failure to update.

I did try a few USB sticks and the final, (successful), attempt was made using 2 x 32gb USB2. I had read that the ports in the car are USB2 and my first attempt using USBE3 sticks did bomb.
Not sure what eventually made it work but I did go back to square one & reformat sticks and redownload files.
Good luck!

I bought my kuga march 2018 maps out of date was told there are no updates yef by the Ford main dealer. My neighbour took delivery of a focus on 3/10/18 and he has the updated maps we searched for Mersey Gateway the new runcorn widnes bridge and found it first time. So why are we being told there are no updates when I've seen them in my neighbours car.

Grateful thanks to Paul 2000 for explaining the problem encountered when trying to upgrade to Sync 3 using a Mac. I had made several unsuccessful attempts following the guidance Ford produce including 'creating' the missing 'SyncMyRide' folder. In the end, I borrowed a friend's Windows PC which created the folder automatically along with the other 2 files and all worked perfectly. Thanks again! John B.

You’re welcome, glad you got it sorted.
I’ve just been through more pain trying to update the Sync on my wife’s 2015 Fiesta to the latest version, as in this thread: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
Finally managed it after about half-a-dozen attempts. Ford don’t seem to make these updates easy.

Hi all,
I am looking for Map updates for my Mondeo 2015 .
I have sync 2 touchscreen
I have looked on Fords sites
https://www.ford.co.uk/owner/resources-and-support...
and a number of other sites.
Says no updates to Maps.
I find that hard to believe ?
What NO updates to maps in 4 years.
New estates and major roads have been built.
Has anyone got any info ?
what map version is the latest 2019 ?
Where else to look for map updates?
Thanks All...

You can buy newer SD Cards on eBay but not sure which is the right one for you.

I'm looking to update my maps on my Ford sat-nav but its a 2010 Focus Mk2 so I think its an NX unit so I can just get a 2018 or 2019 disk rather than the 2010 one I currently have.
