Hi,

I am considering buying a mk7 (2008-12) Ford Fiesta Zetec S with the 1.6 litre petrol Duratec Ti-VCT engine with 118bhp. I was just wondering what are common faults with this generation Fiesta and the 1.6 Duratec?

The Sigma engine has been around for years and to be honest it's pretty reliable. If you get a well looked after car then you shouldn't have many issues (and any you do have will be cheap to fix). 150-200k miles no problem if properly maintained.

Although don't expect it to feel particularly quick compared to more modern stuff. The newer ecoboost engines are quicker and more economical, and although they did initially have a coolant hose issue which caused a few engine failures, that's now been resolved.

Wife has had one since 2012, service it, tyres and petrol. Has never broke down, bodywork still in great shape. Very reliable and an alright car to drive.

EcoBoost engines are good but out of my price range and the 1.6 should be nippy enough for me coming from a 1.2 75bhp Clio. Great to see the sigma engines are reliable!

Insurance seems a bit toppy on them. Probably due to their popularity with young male drivers/crashers.

True, I’ve ran quotes and they have come out at around the £1,000 mark. What other nice cars for around £3,000 could I consider to replace the Clio that’s cheaper to insure than the Ford?

Corsa SRI 1.6 turbo, basically a detuned VXR. I lost interest when I found out how much the road tax is. Never got an insurance quote though.

We had a 2012 1.6 zetec s from new until a year or so ago. It did 112,000 miles in our hands and, apart from usual wear and tear, it needed a driveshaft oil seal and some work on the gearchange mechanism after a particularly bad winter. Apart from that nothing, was a lovely car and regret letting one of my kids trade it in for a GT86.

Did you change the cambelt on it?

Personally not a Vauxhall fan, I know many people who’ve owned Vauxhall’s and not returned to the brand.

Similar money to a comparable age Zetec S, but 6 sp gearbox, disc brakes all round, and an extra 30bhp. It was for a female family member, so running costs mattered more than performance ultimately.

Sounds like a decent little car, but I’ve driven newer Corsas before from around 2013 and just wasn’t a fan.

What’s reliability like as well as mpg and road tax?

I didn't buy one because the road tax was around double what the Fiesta cost. You'll have to google the rest.
