Hi m8

I've never come across this on Ranger,If the tank venting system was blocked you should have trouble filling the tank as the air can't be displaced quickly enough during filling.

Also, I'd have thought you'd notice running concerns as the tank empties and the induced vacuum within the tank restricts fuel flow be sucking up the tank. A tell tale sign of blocked venting systems is a rush of air into the tank as you take the cap off after a good run.
Don't be fooled by the normal sound as you take the cap off though....thats positive pressure escaping

I'd be inclined to think the gauge or printed circuit is defective.

How exactly is the gauge?
Needle still showing empty after it's been filled for 50miles.... or needle staying on full for 50miles?

Do you mean the fuel pressure sensor on the common rail?

If so, remove the black plastic NVH cover from the top of the engine, you'll see the 4 injectors sticking out of the top of the engine.

follow the metal high pressure pipes back from the injectors to the long metal cylindrical component at their other end. Thats the common rail. The fuel pressure sensor is screwed into the end of it.

The engine will not run without a signal back from that sensor!

Sorry m8

I'm not in a position to make comment on the method you've mentioned

Superchips' bluefin might be a better option as it's a pure software solution which has no risk of poor connections
