Test Drove an Mondeo ST TDCI and ST220 today, now quesitons
Discussion
Hi guys i've been studying your posts and i've got an 04 plate 220 saloon Recaro's not a problem no squeaks at all damn comfortable aswell.
Stereo not the sat nav model but Sony system and it's excellent the wife & kids really put it to it's test.
As far as the power issue goes i've also got a 3 door Sierra Cossie which i've not had on a rolling yet but with what i've done to it i'm hoping to see about 320-330 bhp, which being a dry weather car only and doesn't get a lot of use you have to treat it with respect but also like a lunatic. The difference in power is a fair amount but with the 220 you can just jump and it goes like s**t of a stink through out the rev range and i find it so much easier to drive because i feel there's more control where as the Cossy can be all or nothing.
The mpg i'm always getting 22-24 without a problem maybe little bit more worn in with 26000 miles on the clock, before this 220 i had a st24 estate had it 5 years that always gave 28-30 incomparison.

Hey Nebby,
That's why I love my sueprcharger, with the twin screw type it generates full boost at 2000rpm, so you have lots of torque low down and all the power up top, a good combination of the TDCI and ST220 That's what I call a properly flexible engine
I still prefer the older style turbos the cossies had, all or nothing, it's like nothing nothing nothing nothing....BANG!

if you already own a fast car I dont see the point in paying through the nose for insurance, servicing, fuel etc etc for a second car, and to be fair one that isnt really that quick or built to handle as well as other cars around that power mark. The tdci makes sense, way cheaper to run.
I bet your Z4 is awesome
I bet your Z4 is awesome

Agree on the first part but not on the handling and speed part! You haven't lived with a 220 then?
Dave,
Not offense, the ST200 is a great car, good all rounder, but it's not all that quick, you have to remember a Renault Clio now puts out almost 200bhp and is a lot lighter with just a 2 litre engine. Can't comment on the handling, not driven one that hard, I am sure it's good, but no sports car, it's front wheel drive to start with.
That said, can't wait to get a ST TDCI

No offence taken but 155MPH and 0-60 in 6.8 is hardly slow! The handling i am sure would surprise you-leaves a lot of so called sports cars behind!! The 220 is a great grand tourer and for the ££ is unbeatable IMO. Still as a second car you would have to have plenty of spare cash to fuel it and a Z4 i think! No brainer on that front-get the TDCi!

Dave's talking about the ST220... I've seen a lot of reports that it's closer to 240bhp than 220bhp.. oh, and with better build quality than the Clio
I've got Ford test data that gives 237-245PS as the normal output And compared to the Clio, lol, just a little better built!!

You a Fordie..?
Yeah guys, was very impressed with build quality, not far behind German cars now. I was just using the Clio as an example of speed, no danger would i want one
I should also point out this is instead of the Z4... we're hoping to buy a second property at some point, so having no car loan would be great help. Plus I am really into mountain biking and would like to tour the country a little more with the bikes, hence the estate. Plus it's getting expensive to run a sports car in the UK now, even the ST220 will be £400 for a year tax, crazy!

Forthcoming Mondeo is a step up again. The German's should start to worry..
Only one thing can spoil the party-the BS AKA residuals...........

Agreed its not slow, but its behind the other cars of around that bhp bracket, ie imprezza, s2000, audi s3, seat cupra R, fiat coupe turbo, civic type R, V6 clio.
Dont get me wrong, its certainly good value for money and probably cheaper to run and possibly more reliable than most of the above cars.

My 2000 vintage ST200 is costing me 28p / mile - according to the PH profile thingy...

Almost all of which are much smaller, lighter hatchbacks or sportscars. The only one near is the Impreza, and on the road, I doubt the WRX would be much quicker than the Mondeo. Arguing "BHP bracket" is meaningless unless you're talking about vehicles in the same weight or class.

so what other cars are there in that bracket? maybe
bmw 330ci limited to 155mph 0-60 6.3
audi A4 3.2 quattro, limited to 155mph 0-60 6.2
or perhaps a heavy old jaguar x-type
3.0 146mph 0-60 6.6
