Getting a bit bored of my Golf so looking for something to replace it with. The Mondeo ST TDCi looks cracking value with examples in the classifieds with 20k miles, full leather and only £11-12k.

Do we have any owners in the forum who can give their experiences?

What sort of real world fuel ecconomy could I expect on mostly motorways? (30k miles a year out my own pocket so is a concern!)

Is the ride overly harsh on the 18s?

It looks like a decent spec Zetec or Zetec S would come in a few grand cheaper, but I really need to keep whatever car I get for 3 years so I figure the extra spec, sportiness and better looks of the ST should hold my attention better.

Is posting of other forums aloud on here? St Tdci is a cracking car but does have some "issues"! Namely PCM updates causing rough running(injector faults), EGR valve problems, droping rear bumper(depending on age). Ride isn't rough at all wink

I liked it so much i bought my own,ive had none of the above problems but am only up to 14,000 miles so far, its remapped but returning 45mpg on a motorway cruise and 35 in heavy traffic back and forth to work. The ride is great and i couldnt be happier,it caused quite a stir on the recent PH South Wales run as its much quicker than people expect.

I am but must admit given that i see more cars per week than the majority of Ford dealers in this country reliability is pretty good,i wouldnt have bought one otherwise as i dont want to be inconvenienced with a car that breaks down regularly either.

I took a borrowed ST TDCi down to Portsmouth recently.

Loved the look of it - silver - finished-off with chromed bits. Handled very well and had plenty of poke.

I loved it.

By my reckoning, it can reach 140 mph when racing say, a Boxter. But I cannot confirm this, as much as I would like to.

So what are the main issues I should be aware of that should have been remedied via recall or have been recognised by service bulletin?

PSM = a suspension system on Porsches as far as I was aware. Take it thats not what causes problems on Mondeo engines?

According to certain pricing sites, an 05 plated car with ~20k miles should be £10k private and £12.5k dealer. Fords approved used search brings up nothing much below £15k for such vehicles. So do I take the valuation with a pinch of salt or go in hard and low with the dealers?

Most common faults are the back bumper squeaks, turbo faliure(generally while under warranty),injector faliure(Dont use cheap diesel to reduce this risk)and some calibration issues which appear to be sorted now for the majority of customers.Though these are the faults i see the most i dont see many,i have had two customers with squeaky bumpers, one with turbo faliure, one with calibration issues(Which required a new set of injectors in the end),certainly no more than the faliure rate for a standard Mondeo diesel.

I have the Ghia with the ST engine.

Very good, on a long cruise can get 55mpg, average about 45. Very good car except for 1 persistant fault where (hopefully by the sound of it, Jon GT2) may know something about

Car been into dealer 4 times over the last 10,000 miles for a persistant NSR wheel warble. Checked the usual sticking caliper, handbrake cable, pads/discs checked, cleaned greased etc and all passed OK.

Usually worst when performing a left hand turn (say into a side road)

Was in last week for almost 2 days for fault finding. Service manager came for a drive with me and couldn't hear anything.

Drive off with a cheery wave and it starts doing it againfurious

Don't know what part of the country you are in but if you do opt for the ST check out www.archersofashby.co.uk based near Leicester, just bought my second Mondeo from them (a titanium x) nice people and selling only low mileage mint Fords at very competetive prices, I nearly went for a ST Tdci but being a lazy sod wanted an auto hence the choice of a Titanium x

Thanks for the ongoing comments chaps. The choice basically comes down to Mondeo ST TDCi vs 330d Sport.

Either 3yr old, 60k mile 330d or 1yr old, 10k mile ST TDCi. One has warranty and less miles, the other is faster and reputedly a more comfortable place to be.

Dificult choice but a nice one to have.

A2Z thats a difficult one without hearing the noise myself, handbrake cables can cause a noise where they touch under the rear of the car worth checking that, but i would say its likely to be the rear brakes as that is common to all Mondeos, try applying the handbrake slightly if its possible whilst its making the noise and see if it changes or goes. The rear bumper makes an odd noise too but more a harsh squeak than a warble.Top mount is also possible but not common.

Well, I should point out it will be £x plus a loan or finance to buy, not an outright purchase, hence why I'm leaning towards the Ford rather than the BMW.

As I have another car for outright hooning, the ultimate pace of the car isnt such a concern. The arguement that I could do any work the BMW required myself is valid, I *could* assuming I will always have free time and source of cheap parts. The Mondeo on the other hand would have a warranty on it and to be perfectly honest, the prices you can find for failed turbos and injectors on modern diesels is scarey, warranty would definately be a bonus!

I have the 2.2 TDCi in Titanium X guise.
Bought it 10 months ago with 18k on the clock has now turned 38k.
Only problem so far was a faulty MAF sensor that was fixed under warranty.
It's driven hard and averages 42mpg.
Handles and goes very well as a Astra VXR driver will testify, his face when he saw what was keeping up with him that night was priceless.
Very comfortable and has done a few trips 5 up fully loaded with no noticeable loss of performance or economy.
The titanium X is well worth a look as it's almost identical to the ST, 18" alloys etc but no bodykit, but has a few more toys that are extra on the ST, voice control Bluetooth is standard as are climate control front seats.
There are quite a few ST and Titanium X's out there, but most are company cars with no extras fitted, can sometimes be worth holding out for one that's had a few extras fitted.
Xenon's, Bluetooth on the ST and rear parking sensors are "nice to have's" for example.

Hi, I own a ford mondeo 2.0 tdci 90 000 miles and was very happy untill recently everthing went wrong at once.Firt my starter motor went and the garage could not offer a guaranty due to a design fault on the mondeo. One month later the design fault popped up its head in the form of a new clutch slave cylinder flywheel and bill for 800 quid. All fixed one week on both front springs gave way also the top mounts costing 350quid which i was also told was a design fault of the mondeo so now im just waiting for the injectors to go now which is yet another design fault. So a word of caution to anybody considering buying a mondeo do your research first, as every garage ive been to whince when you pull up in a mondeo.

Not heard of any of those "design faults". If it's a known concern usually it has a TSB-got any info? Have you owned this car fro new or purchased @ 90K miles? Sounds like you got a bad one-can't tar the whole range with the same brush because of that!
