Old school supercar builder TVR is to leap into the 21st century by developing an active suspension system. Spurred on by the performance of cars such as the Mercedes SL55 AMG, which blends a sensational ride with huge grip, the Blackpool outfit's boss Peter Wheeler has decided it's time to investigate the hi-tech set-up, we can reveal.

However, the system's complexities mean TVR fans shouldn't expect to see it soon. The technology is unlikely to debut before the next generation of cars arrives in three years.

The last UK firm to trial active suspension was Lotus, which tested it on an Esprit a decade ago. The set-up proved too expensive and extreme for everyday use, and road-going versions were never built.

it just means that there will be more stuff to go wrong on the TVR. with the addition of a computer to control the Active suspension lets hope they dont choose microsoft to develop the software, you might nee dto reboot while on your b road bash.

It would be good for the Tiv to have some more technology unfder the bonnet, but i think it will either work with no probs and we all praise them for the risk they took and for the improved handling of the cars. or we will be back here moaning about more bits breaking...

I say they should use existing active suspension that is proven and develop and evolve that into a TVR part not just go in it alone..

Steve,

PS looking for new suspension for my tiv any ideas on whats best????

Well, personnally I will fit Koni shock absorbers on my Porker but I have no clue on how good they can be on a Tiv
What's actually wrong with your suspension? Too soft?

PS: your profile shows you haven't covered a single mile in your Cerbie...

I'd talk to Leda.

I had a Spax setup on a race car and it was absolute rubbish, so we changed to Leda, twice the price but ten times as good.

Saw an active suspension system on a racing car once. It looked _relatively_ simple. The upper wishbone (I fink?) was attached to a pivoting arm with an hydraulic cylinder on the other end of it. No doubt the clever bit was the electronic sensors and the control software. The visible bit of the system looked like it was sufficiently simple that it might be ... reliable?

They're also well into developing a six speed sequential gearbox, which I believe will debut in race spec. Tuscan R cars. That's pretty impressive in itself, but it strikes me that ABS would be a more sensible development bet, if TVR wants to start attracting a new customer base. (PS - I don't want to restart the ABS debate again!!)

Shirley the best thing would be to buy this sort of thing off the shelf from the likes of Merc. If it is to come, then something as technically fraught as this is best left to the big boys to develop. Tilting trains I'll say no more

Its got to be a logical evolution for them as a manufacturer. I can also see it being funded by the take off in America which judging by the interest and debate there has been on this forum alone is set to be huge!

Long live TVR and their wonderful innovation I say!

This has been a bit of a nightmare for TVR. They developed it out of a standard Borg Warner Box and are now having to go back to basics as it's providing unviable in its current form. Expect it in another 3-4 months at least...

Expect a new car at this years motorshow. This will be the first one of the "next Generation" TVR...

I personally think that TVR is on the right way now with doing sucessful motorsport and taking the developments to the street cars.

Better to build less cars with better build quality.
Maybe reaching another price target, but fewer cars to higher prices help the resale value of our cars.

I agree with the fewer cars, higher prices idea. I'm sure a few people would gladly pay a few bob more knowing their cars will have longer warranties and better screwed together... Not neccessarily faster, lighter or better specced.

Any idea what the new car might be? A more 'civilised' Speed12 derivative? Or perhaps a Tuscan 2?

Thoughts on a postcard...

I reckon the Chimaera will go before the Cerbie....
Lets face it, the Cerbie has a proper engine in it !

Chimaera is on it's last legs anyway I thought (only the 4.5 available?).

With the less quality cars and highre initial price theme, us less *moneyed* folk'll just have to wait a couple more years for the secondhand ones to permeate the market.

As Mike says Chim is practically out of the door already. My money would be on a replacement for the Cerb as well. But then, thinking how much emotion the last one evoked and the fact that it was relatively cheap, blisteringly quick and lovely looking this 'new' TVR is going to have to be something pretty damned special!
