So a 450 engine is likely to be more robust than an early 500 engine then?

Beastie (Factory Chimaera 500) was first registered January 1998 and the block wasn't cross bolted. My bright shiny V8D block (built by The Man) is cross bolted.

I believe the general consensus on that is yes, but that said there's plenty of standard and modified non cross bolted 500's, some with SC's, with no issues....

Yes and the Rangie 4.6 is the most robust, cross bolted and bigger journals.

Don't they tend to suffer from a cracked engine block?

Depends what you say by most robust, and what you are doing with the engine-and where you are going to tune it too, in standard form and everyday driving, both are as good as each other, however if you are going to thrash the living crap out of it on a track day, the yes the 450 is more likely to get you home, obviously this is also down to making sure your engine is running spot on, (fuelling ignition etc...) the 500 will not take any kind of detenotion-pinking before it starts eating itself, so a hot track day just make sure it is running well.
As for cracked blocks, the later cross bolted blocks are certainly more common to have problems than the earlier ones, however this is way more common in the range rover, I have put it down to a combination of over torqued heads due to the use of stretch bolts and the fact they run way hotter stats than the tvr does.

Good to know the definitive Rob!

OT, Rob, worth putting my stage 4 heads and ported manifold from you on the 5.5 or not worth it?

Neither my previous '94 or 2000 Griff's were cross bolted.

This is what a reputable engine builder told me too.
