Just back from Germany where i was pounding up and down autobahns in an Audi A5 TDi Quattro, seriously impressive car.3 litre diesel,245 bhp,369LB torque,0-60, 5.7sec and 155mph and 50mpg.Little wonder one gets the odd shock from an oil burner these days whilst out in the TVR.got me thinking though,is there a place in the future line up for a diesel TVR ?
Thoughts......
You are kidding, aren't you? TVRs are not just about speed and certainly not about mpg.......

Didn't look for one on You Tube but came across this, so it must be true!

If someone out there is experimenting they need to let us know performance/MPG figures

If a driver is not sufficiently competent to select the correct gear for maximum acceleration then a modern common rail diesel is perhaps the best compromise.

TVR diesel? Where is the anticipation in even starting the thing? Sense of occasion etc.
I would hope that a TVR engineer would be able to breath some TVRness into the exhaust, the Audi had quite an interesting note for a non sporting production saloon, the days of oil burning clatter is long gone..

You have the luxury of living in a low road tax economy(which could change very quickly due to the incompetence of the modern TD/MP),i pay over 2K in road tax alone so have to consider the overall cost of toys, quite frankly a tarmac wripping monster doing 50mph appeals to me regardless

Diesel burns too slowly. Useable RPM, torque curves and inertias are all the opposite of what's needed to raise a smile.

I'll repeat. Diesels are hateful things. They have a place, namely in the cars people buy to save money driving to or for work, or for high torque sustained without much change in RPM. They've got no place in a car built not for hating though.

Rather strangely - the rover based V8 cars especially 5 litre have an almost diesel like torque / power curve.

More torque than bhp for starters.

The don't sound like diesels though biggrin

I also run a 3.0 tdi Audi A6Q as a daily, however, despite being powerful & torquey you wouldn't wish to make a sports car out of it with the derv clatter no matter how well muted inside & narrow rev band etc doesn't equate to a drivers machine.

Also most are fitted with auto/semi auto gearboxes and despite manual shifters and overall effectiveness when mated to a diesel, again you wouldn't want one IMO in a sports car where full interaction is everything.

That said they are devastaingly effective tools - just not as sports cars.

Devastating? No. A litre bike is devastating. As is a Cobra 427. And even a Group B quattro. But a diesel Audi??? It's just another Kraut diesel car, quite good at trundling around the M25 though.

This topic interests me , I cannot understand the hatred towards diesels , diesel technology has come along hugely over the past 10 or so years, and you have to admit it's left the majority of petrol engines behind, if they can design a Tvr or indeed any car where the Diesel engine can do the same or better than a petrol engine, as well as increased mpg/ lower tax etc then surely it's a no brainer? I'm sure a 535d lump in a Tvr would be an absolute weapon, and it be good for 150k miles without the need for all the maintenence / valve clearances / rebuilds.

1) Most peoples' idea of enjoying a sports car on the road is not maintaining consistent lap times of the M25 all day and all night with minimal fuel stops

2) Sports car does not equal Race car

3) Probably a diesel

4) Yes, they sound crap

The modern diesel engine can not be compared to a sierra 1.8dt, that is like comparing a mini 1000cc with the now available 200bhp+ 1 litre petrol engines fitted to the fiesta. A tuned diesel is fantastic tool, and as for noise and refinement you would not be able to hear a bmw 330d or 335d running sat next to my ajp 4.2 and that's at idle!

I actually quite like the idea! it goes against everything a Cerbera is but i think it would be interesting to have a ridiculously torquey V8/V10/V12 diesel + AWD Cerbera for the winter months..

BUT, it would have to sound good. Some popping, gasping and fizzing from two huge turbos would be interesting! Might even fit in with the 'angry dog' personality.

To be fair, my 530d has a petrol-esque rasp/snarl at times, but no where near as nice as a petrol.

ps. I didn't buy a 530d over a 530i for money saving, i bought it because i like the torque smile Its the same reason people like the lazy Rover v8 engines, they don't particularly rev or make big power. However, they do sound fantastic and you can't get that from a derv smile
