You obviously don't visit the Aston Pistonhead pages or in indeed the AMOC forum. Many, many people are questioning the use of Mercedes engines...

Anyone getting upset over Aston using a Mercedes engine when they've been using German engines out of a Ford owned factory in Cologne ever since most people on PH have been buying the cars is a a bit daft. But it does show just how important it was for Aston to negotiate into their engine deal with Ford the right to place their name above the factory door. Just shows the importance of getting thebmarketing right rather than the product as far as most consumers are concerned.

As may be, I was simply answering the previous poster's point.

Why is it that when new TVR said they would use a tweaked third-party engine there were lots of people saying how can they charge so much for a 'kit-car', yet Aston Martin drop a third-party engine in and lob in the infotainment system and controls, then hike the price by 30% and no-one seems to question it? Not saying it the Merc kit isn't a big improvement over the previous incarnation, just wondering why it's more acceptable to many.
Because a Mercedes or AMG engine is perceived as advanced, slightly exclusive and premium priced, used by pagani etc. A Ford modular engine from a mustang doesn't really have the same ring to it...

Talk to a Speed Six owner and ask them how they feel about their "bespoke" engine that needs rebuilding every 5 minutes.

I am really pleased that TVR went with the Ford V8, it's a great unit and will probably have more character than the McLaren / Ricardo V8 that powers every single one of the modern macs. They seem to get away with it for cars costing 2/3 times as much, TVR will be fine.

Now I come to think of it, the M838 was originally made for Nissan!

Agreed. My Speed Six rebuild came with a 100k mile warranty.
Nevertheless, engine making is so specialised that it really does seem sensible to leave it to the big boys.
I really don’t see a modern car buyer being that fussed about the oily bits under the bonnet of an Aston Martin that looks and sounds great.

It's stunning, seems that I've made the right decision on placing an order for it :-)

Here's Shmee's take on it:

Ok I don't usually like AM's as they seem to just look a little bit "mature person".. but this .. this one looks pretty awesome. If thats what the new TVR had been like, I would have held out for one.

Yep happy to speak to anyone about my 2 Speed Sixes - that neither have needed a rebuild, both have be awesome, utterly reliable, spine tingling a full chat and evil sounding as hell - and docile as a pussy cat (well a noisy pussy cat) when needed.

Not overly enamoured with the choice of V8 for the new TVR. Its no AJP V8 for sure. Hopefully Cosworth will have injected some character into it

It’s beautiful indeed but a different price point really.

That’s the problem for the griffith though. There are loads of really beautiful cars from established manufacturers in their price bracket.

It’s not really raw (or cheap) enough for most people wanting a tvr and not established enough for people wanting an Aston or a Porsche.

among my cars the only one with touchscreen sat nav is the Boxster and it's pretty well impossible to use. Fortunately there's also a knob which has a scroll and push facility which is much easier to use. I dislike touchscreen when driving because it's distracting trying to focus one's finger on the spot and difficult having pointed one's finger to keep it on the spot while traversing bumps on the road biggrin.

All I take from that is in a Porsche you feel bumps. hehe
I have to agree remembering a sequence of knob turning button pushing is far better than taking your eye off the road to find a point on a small screen.

Scanning the classifieds the longer they leave this the harder the final sell will be... there's an MP12 at 90k now.

Nobody outside TVR really knows how 'raw' it will be. The video with LE giggling mixed with profanities suggests it may well be quite raw! smile

What's the warranty requirements? Only to get serviced by the repairer? Who did yours as I have a colleague with a smokey tuscan at under 50K having already had a rebuild at 20K

Powers Performance did mine (before I bought it). I think they require any servicing to be done by themselves, which is reasonable.
I've always found them to be very good to deal with. Anyway, your colleague should check out their site for the latest info.
