Struggling for real life reviews of these tyres, looking for an upgrade from R1R's..... I think mine have gone off, was suprised to see date code is 09, Yikes, bought them in 11.

i know they haven't been out long but was hoping a few TVRs were wearing them by now.

Cheers.

I've had them on a Caterham and they were awesome in the dry, and not so clever in damp and wet conditions. In my opinion too much of a compromise in anything other than dry, so as I've bought the T350 to use in all conditions, I'm going to go for pilot super sport 4's next time round.

I have used loads of sets of R888s on my chimaera.

They are fantastic in the dry and I would not recommend them for anything else although I have used them as a road tyre occasionally , (Couldn't be bothered to put the road wheels back on again).

I run R1Rs on the road and feel that there really isn't much better than these tyres.

As a comparison, I ran the R1Rs on the track and even though lap times were slower than a similar car shod with R888s there wasn't a huge difference. They really are a good tyre.

I would go with another set if the sizes are still available.

Still got original 888s. Are these similar compound? It is this that gives the traction rather than the tread pattern

R1Rs are supposed to be the same compound as R888s as far as I'm aware.

Thanks chaps, as Willfin says R888R's are suppose to be worse than R888's in the damp or wet. E rated.

Maybe I'm just expecting too much from my R1R's. All 3 tyres share the same GG compound.

Be good to hear from more peoples experience of R888R's, loads of info and reviews of R888's which have been replaced with the R888R.

Original R888's seemed to be the ultimate tyre on TVRs, ok for road just avoid standing water yikes

But with the limited reviews of R888R's this might not be the case anymore.

I've had a set of r888r's on my Tuscan for about 1k miles, and had r888's on a previous Tuscan.
Superb in the dry of course and fine in damp conditions as long as you're driving sensibly, don't think you'd ever want to push too much in the damp no matter what tyre you have.
No experience of standing water with 888r's but I wouldn't use the car intentionally in those conditions.
Got caught in a big downpour in the old car coming back from Leeds but didn't find it too much of a concern as you tend to concentrate driving these things anyway.
I would only swap to another "normal" tyre if I was touring and racking up miles.

I have had 888's and 888R's on my griff and even mixed them front/rear last year for a while so I have a good feel for both

the honest answer is that it depends what you are using them for. For sprint track work they are probably the weapon of choice now that the Kuhmo V60's are c rated and therefore banned. For road work they are fine you just need to be careful if its raining hard

in terms of outright grip I don't think they are quite as good as the R888's but only because the R888's were available in softer compounds whereas the R's are only available in medium. they are very good for grip in the dry and also good in damp conditions but like all B list tyres struggle a bit in standing water

hope that helps

oh by the way just to challenge the myth that 888's are no good in the wet see this short video of me flat out in the hissing rain at anglesey a year or two ago https://youtu.be/NKX3TiOfN4o

I had a set on a modded VX220T a few years back.

As said already, fantastic in the dry, much less so in the wet if you've got a high power to weight ratio.

On a slightly damp road I was able to wheel spin in 5th if I was a little heavy footed.

As good as any other legal slick in the dry though. smile

EDIT: R888's they were.

I have been running R1R's on my LS tam. Fronts needed changing recently, and gave NS2r's a go, as I had heard good things about them. I can now honestly say the R1R's are better IMHO - they offer more grip, cold or warm. Once the NS2R's are worn out I will be putting the R1R's back on it.
I too have been tempted to use 888's, but I'm reluctant because of wet weather usage.
