Just seen the trailer, lots of CGI, nods to plenty of other films hopefully it'll be decent.

I have read the book a couple of times. It's pretty fun in a nostalgic kind of way. I know a lot of people found it hard work, but I could get past the poor writing style.
When I first read it I thought they'd never be able to make a film of it for a couple of major reasons:
1. Getting the necessary permissions for everything from star wars to Godzilla and everything else you can imagine would be impossible to organise. After all it took Marvel 10 years to be allowed to make a movie about Spider-Man. So zero chance of sony letting the film makers use leopardon.
2. A film of the book would be a bit dull. Many of the key sequences are basically the hero acting out movies from the eighties like war games of the holy grail. That wouldn't really work in a two hour movie.
Now I've seen the trailer I think I was right. There is very little in there that is from the book. I certainly don't remember a massive car chase with the sixers. The iron giant? It's literally one of my favourite films, but has no place here. Even simple things like where Wade comes from are wrong. He doesn't come from Ohio, he has to travel there. Obviously that takes out a chunk of story and running time, so I could probably forgive that.
Yes it's just a movie, yes I'm being picky with the detail, but why bother unless you're going to do it properly. Hopefully it will be a good pic, but I doubt it will do justice to the source material.

That's my thoughts too, it didn't help when Spielberg said he was going out of his way NOT to include the references from his own films. Several of the lead actors have also said it is going to be very much an 'inspired by the book' film. The trailer is interesting, I had my own idea of what Oasis looked like and hyper realistic wasn't it, for me it was more of a cartoon/cell shaded type of environment but I can appreciate that this wouldn't work very well for modern day film viewers that haven't read the book.

So I've set very low expectations for this, hopefully this will allow me to enjoy the film eventually.

My nephew recommended the book, which I enjoyed very much. Hugely nostalgic. The film will need to be different. That's OK.

I think the author of the book is writing the screenplay, so if he's had to make modifications for access to characters and for what works on film then hopefully they'll be in the spirit of the book.

Fingers crossed that Spielberg can also add some of his magic and wonder.

The book is completely unfilmable as a movie so I don't have any issue with wholesale changes, as always the book is the book and a film won't change that.

As long as I enjoy it as a standalone movie that's all I can ask, I had assumed that rights issues alone would mean vast changes but I'm pretty impressed with what they've shown in terms of characters from different companies/universes under one roof. I imagine plenty of surprises kept under wraps too, for that reason I'm not planning on watching any more footage or reading up on it.

An 'inspired by' movie exploring the concept of themes of the book is what I was hoping for and I imagine what we'll get.
