T.V.Rs ENGINE DILEMMA
Discussion
As a propective sports car buyer I was looking at a Cerbera (need 4 seats). I have always loved TVRs and always will. But reliability is a big problem for me and I can't afford for engine re-builds etc. Constant problems will eventaully spoil the experience for me.
So I've looked at others mainly Porsche 996.
So yesterday after testing a 996 I was still unsure until a Tuscan passed me on the M40. Set off at a top speed and looked fantastic untill be braked for slower traffic and his brake lights stayed on when he accelerated again. Doh

How many V8 jags have you heard about that suffer with poor reliabillty?
Lost Boys
I can vouch for one thats been though a clutch, 2 gear boxes and an engine in 22,000 miles. Driven by a old motorway type driver too.
See my posting above also.
I should add that the service dept wasn't the least bit surprised by the faults, which tends to put to rest the 'Friday car' theory, and suggests a more widespread issue.
To top it all, there have been recalls with braking, steering and suspension components.
And Phil, yes, it seems quite a few TVRs do that brake light thing under accelleration! Was really puzzled at 3 Sisters Sprint earlier this year when the Griff in front set off flat-out, brake lights ablaze. I asked the driver about it, pondering the possiblity of some devious new traction control technique, but he claimed not to have been anywhere near the brake pedal, and I've noticed it since on other cars.

For Christ's sake man, it's TVR NOT T.V.R.
Really? I thought you were just pontificating and expecting others to bow to your superior knowledge.
By the way, the company calls itself TVR, it writes TVR, and it is TVR. And you allegedly own a Chimaera, not a Chimera or a Chimeara.
On the other hand, if it isn't important to get things right then I guess you won't mind if we refer to you as Merk Boreley from Lnodone a.k.a. BULETHUNDURR.
I am not getting involved in this. This suject has been done to the death.
How I wish I could close topics.
PS. It IS written TVR not T.V.R if you look at the badge on the from of your Chim you will notice there are no full stops also look at the TVR website if you want confirmation and there was no need for your comment toward Terminator - he has been a TVR owner for aslong as Dad has been at the factory so give him some credit.

My last word on the subject, i couldnt give a f**k what anyone thinks but here goes. Last month my car was at a large independant specialists (formally a main dealer)whilst there i was given a tour around the work shops,i counted seven cerbs and two tuscans with half there engines out. When i asked what the problem was with all of them i was given the answer that they all had broken cranks. I then asked does it seem like a design fault to which i was given the answer (WELL! WE ARE NOT SURE BUT ITS A PROBLEM WE COME ACROSS ON A REGULAR BASIS)(draw your own conclusions) he then went on to say that the engine is a weak unit and not as robust as the rover V8 and after hard use is susceptible to crank damage amongsts other problems i.e.worn pistons and liners and cooling problems,he then went on to say that wait, for it (TVR) done no formal long term testing of the engines, and that all the testing was carried out on the race track, which is o.k. on a short duration over so many laps but doesnt give a true picture over thousands of miles to which every car manufacturer subjects there engines. On hearing this news my heart sank as i wanted to trade up to a cerb or a tuscan, when i told him this his reply was the tuscans engine is a improved slightly but if i were you i would for the time being stick with your V8.I love the cerb and tuscan to death like as any other, WAIT FOR IT (TVR) but is this really justified to ask some one to part with 40 to 55 grand on a car with these reliabillity problems (I THINK NOT) before anyone asks to name my source im not going to, other than as a group they have had a long connection with the factory as a main dealer and through racing and competion and are more than an authority on the subject of TVR.

Funny isnt it BLUETHUNDER that your specialist has all these broken cranks to fix and yet no one else seems to have broken cranks - fish (finger) followers, camshafts, valves yes, but cranks, nope - maybe your "specialist" isnt doing the correct servicing
There we go, that should get the fur flying
