would you use gasket cement on the metal to metal thermostat housing to block joint?
No the rubber seal on the thermostat is all you need, just the very lightest smear of grease/Vaseline to help it all seat together nicely smile

Bad advice! Never use a hydrocarbon based grease anywhere near rubber (unless you know it to be synthetic). A smear of silicone grease maybe.

I come from a generation who'd never heard of Silicone, or dielectric grease. 50 years of servicing and repairing various plant, engines and machinery I've never had a problem but to be 100% yes, pop out a buy a little tube of Silicone grease or live dangerously and use whatever you have in the garage or bathroom! smile

Quality of rubber has deteriorated drastically over the last few decades. Back in 'the day' slap on what you like. Today? Use the right product. Even then it'll probably need attention in a year or so biggrin

Hi all - closing this loop with a thanks for all of your advice. Ended up using the old thermostat housing, new silicone pipes, recored radiator (Berkshire Radiators) and of course the obligatory rub down, hammerite, waxoyl on the chassis that I normally couldn’t get to. Couldn’t have done it without your help. Thanks. Next post - intermittent starting problem.
