A good year in a cerb ie 1 cheap indie service and no breakages and no tyres etc = £500 - £1000 (imho).
An average to not so good year = 1 med expensive indie service, new tyres, new clutch, exhaust and a couple of niggles = £2k - £3K
A bad year = avg year plus an engine rebuild ie above costs plus another £3k - £5K.
Again all imho.
I reckon if you allow £3k pa and use the indie guys to look after it then over a 3 year period you should be ok with that budget. And if you are lucky to avg you will have loads left over.
The other thing is a warranty MIGHT protect you from some of the big bills (but dont count on it). My view is dont bother with a WHA warranty as they can be difficult over some claims.
I would say that a cerb is about 25% more expensive than a Chim on the good to medium years. BUT in a bad year it would be 30 - 40% more expensive BUT is more likely to have a bad year. And if you go for a cerb straight 6 then you are more likely to have a bad year(s).
All IMHO and others have different views from their experiences.
At the end of the day a Cerb is almost a supercar and isnt for the shy retiring type. Whereas a Chim is more of classic sports car but with loads more power.

thanks for the cost breakdown - I am not put off yet..... My worry is why should a 30k motor need a re-build? Is it that they are over tuned, thrashed or badly designed and manufactured. Looking through the ads, seems a lot of clutches get replaced - any view on why this should be. My usual run would be 10 - 15 miles into London on the A3 with 10 miles of traffic - on the return the traffic can be stop start for half an hour =- am I going to burn a lot of clutches and what does that replacement usually cost??

another general question - I believe Cerb engines changed mid 98 and that the earlier engine was dodgier than the first - any comments on this. I haven't given up at all on Chimaera - any plus points from owners out there over cerbs??
