I'm thinking of having this done....mainly to make the brute behave in town and not kangaroo all over the shop. Had a chat with that nice man Mark Adams who ensured me that I would see an improvement for around £600, can anyone give me first hand info, tia

If you're looking to do this sort of thing, Mark is absolutely the best person to go with. He knows these things inside and out.

In my experience, he will start by making sure there are no other problems (quite often there are) and then change to his 'standard' chip and make sure the car is fuelled properly across the whole range. Sometimes he will tweak it slightly to suit your particular car. My result was slight increase in power but a massive improvement in mid-range torque, tractability and throttle response, the car was completely transformed. Others have reported similar results. I reckon it's probably worth getting Mark to check it over every couple of years on general principle.

I can recommend Mr Adams but you may want to try replacing your oxygen sensors first especially if you do a lot of short journeys or are in traffic most of the time.

I am looking at fitting one of the ACT carbon fibre plenums, which would then neccessiate a retune (so will keep Mark Adams' name handy).

However, I'm currently insured with, Cornhill, through the A Manning/TVRCC scheme, and they seem very reluctant to insure a car with engine mods.

Can anyone suggest an alternative?

Next question... has anyone had a remap done, declared it to Warranty Holdings AND kept their warranty?

I had my Supra done, and it simply never occurred to me to mention it to the extended warranty people. I don't think that was very sinful, because you could take a Supra engine way beyond my 400 brake without risk.

The work was arranged by the dealer I bought it from (new), and it certainly didn't trouble them enough to mention any such potential downside.

Regards, McNab.

For around £1500 you can junk the whole management system & distributor and replace it with a fully mapped system. Expect to see far better power figures this way.

The standard system's very limited not least because of the mechanical distributor...

You mean 'mappable' rather than 'mapped'? How much would you budget to get one of these fully mapped for your car? (I'm guessing it'll be into four figures.)

Depends on the system and how far you want to go, the Emerald ssytem I run has idle speed control, closed loop, accel enrichment, 3D fuel and spark maps, temperature offsets for air and water temp and and can turn fans or other things on and off all for under £600.
If you're reasonably proficent with a soldering iron you can wire it in yourself and then get it roughly right on the road then map it fully on the rollers. Which should only take a few hours, say another £100? All in all good fun but you'll quickly come to realise what brilliant bit of kit a carburettor is. A real question of pays yer money and takes yer choice.

£1500 is the figure given to me for supply, fit and map on a rolling road.

Wish I'd done that rather than playing with the standard system which has cost me about half that anyway...
