To encourage good practice, all those let down by bad servicing should contribute to a special award to find the best dealer. To be awarded on the Pistonheads site by Ted. 3 Awards should be given: These are : TVR dealer of the year Most improved TVR dealer Wooden spoon for the dealer with the most complaints How about this to get better service.

does anyone (I'm thinking specifically of those that live in the Kent area) know what sort of reputation the TVR dealer in Larkfield (Maidstone) has concerning service, sales and after-sales care?

That would be Walldonway, sales are good (Nick Mason, started at WLA, then went to HR Owen, now back at Walldonway), service and after sales has been a bit slack recently, they were very short staffed in the workshop - this has changed now as they have some new staff, so we will see how it goes, but I have been using them for the last 2.5 years, and on the whole am very happy with them - what more can I say? (That was with my old 4.0 Chimaera and now my Tuscan) ================ Graham and Rosie

TVR Power just did my 24k Griff 500 service too. As it was my first experience of TVR servicing I can't say how they compare to anyone else, but they seemed pretty good. No courtesy car, though I understand they are getting one in soon. They put the Rover engines together in the first place so ought to know them better than anyone else. I got the impression that they care about what they're doing (not the case with most places I've known). Interestingly, the chap I spoke to mentioned that he would have run the car on a good mineral oil rather than Mobil 1. Apparently Mobil 1 is so good that there is almost zero metal-metal contact when its used, so the engine doesn't get run in properly. 6000 miles is not enough to get it run in properly either. Any views on this? Also, they spotted a rather serious problem with the suspension that wasn't picked up by the franchised TVR dealer who sold me the beast not long ago. Warranty luckily covers it and its back in soon to get it sorted. Verdict on TVR Power? Good. Steve, is your Griff a brownish one?

Gasblaster, I'm now running my 4l Chimp on Castrol RS 10/60 on recomendation. Reason being that the current Mobil 1 is a lot thinner that when it was introduced & so has a tendency to drain from the top of the engine, not too healthy on cold starting.... Mobil 1 is available in a motorsport grade which is more viscous, only problem with the Castrol is it takes a bit longer to get to working temperature but then again I've never given it a lot of welly from cold anyway.... Hope this helps, Ross.

Re mobil 1 -- for running in the motor a conventional oil (and change it and the filter early) is best, then switch to the fully synthetic as it copes best with periods of inactivity (it doesn't degrade so fast) and extreme temperatures both typical of Tiv use. The more oil changes the better -- time as well as distance.

As regards servicing, does anyone have experience with Offord Motor Company in Offord D'Arcy, somewhere between Cambridge and Huntingdon? They offer TVR servicing at very reasonable pricing (compared to your average dealer) but can I safely leave my 4.5 cerbie in their hands? Are they allowed to put stamps in the manual? Any comments gratefully received!

They looked after my S2 for several years while I worked out that way. I was very happy with their work, and they came across as very friendly and knowedgable chaps. Everybody else I know who has dealt with them seems happy with them and they're also occasional visitors to the Northants regional meetings. At the time I was dealing with them (five years ago) I would have been cautious about taking an AJP engine to anybody except an approved dealer. I guess nowadays that might not be so important.
