Am consdidering removing the front no.plate on my 98 Chimaera 500 and replacing it with a "stick on the bonnet type"
a)to aid cooling (although as yet have had no overheating issues)
b)i think it might look good in a sort of classic British Sports Car way!?!?

Question is,are stick on front plates still legal?
Also who supplies them these days?

True. Only the Jaguar E-type legally gets away for some reason - special 'bend the law' rule apparently!

At a guess I'd say that some of the Law Lords or HMG own Jag E-types then.. Not that anyone would have a one rule for them and one for us policy of course..

I've recently removed the stick on plate that was on my Griff. Purely for cosmetic reasons - prefered a normal plate. I've fitted a 13x3 plate, cruising temps have gone up by appx 5 degrees. Reckon a stick on would look a bit out of place on a Chimp?

If I remember rightly, pre-1972 cars can have virtually any type of numberplate. Post '72 the number plate must be of the reflective white/yellow with black letters/numbers and must be vertical and of the correct size/spacing etc. New cars must now have correct font/spacing etc as well. Therefore a stick-on number plate on the bonnet would be illegal on a Chimaera.

Maybe somebody here knows better though

Legality aside, I know someone who has done so and finds that the car runs a little cool on M'ways!

Could end in too much of a good thing! Shows off the grill shape beautifully, though - you can see where "Assed-In More-Tons" pinched the idea ....

Have found a supplier and ordered one "just to see"
Anybody know what sort of reaction the local constabulary will have ?
Its not worth points on my licence is it ?
Although police round here usually have more important matters to deal with so I might go unnoticed

I know a Griff owner who removed his numberplate completely and apparently nobody noticed. I suppose if Plod caught you, you could apologise profusely and say it must have fallen off. Seems to be asking for trouble though, and there's enough of that on the roads, what with coppers behind every bush.

My front plate was stolen by a pheasant (or it could have been a peasant, difficult to tell at 110mph!) over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

Not had so much as a raised eyebrow from the numerous boys in blue I have passed since.

Matt.

Would have hung him......

.....for a week or so, then, when his head had come off, plucked and roasted him to be served up with.......

[wakes up again] Sorry, which thread was this?

I removed my front number plate from the car last summer and got away with it all season. Until the end when I got a £40 fine from the traffic warden for failure to show licience plate.

I also was considering a stick on plate which I sure plod would be fine over. However I think on the bonnet they look silly, but how about putting one below the grill. Here's what it might look like.

I keep seeing a lot of high performance cars with small plates under the grills. Are people getting away with these. I've not had problem with the bikes small plates over the years.

I have a 13"x3" ish plate on my chim, I must pass traffic plod almost every day.

No problems so far, I think the small frontal area of a chim/griff makes them look the right proportions until you are side by side with one the correct size.

Or maybe they just have better things to look for ?? I wish !!

Maybe the plod your way have nothing better to do but I was stopped at the M25/M3 Jnc about 4 weeks ago as I had changed front plate on my Chim to a nice 10x2 inch one. Got a major lecture!!!

Clearly plod here have nothing better to do!

I have never had a problem with my stick-on, but I have decided to change it for a proper one sited as low as possible.

Am I the only person who thinks that stick on plates look worse than normal ones?

I know normal ones aren't exactly subtle, but when they're removed they normally leave a flat blank space, similar in size to a number plate!

Whenever I see a car with a stick-on plate, the plate is the first thing I notice - I think it detracts from the car.

Just my opinion!
