Stupid act on a public road – why did I do it?
Discussion
Did a bit of a stupid thing today really. On a dual carriageway slip road when I saw looming large in the mirro a Mitsubishi GTO 3000 I think it was (huge ugly red Jap thing).
Anyway, I gunned the Chim and left him – then pulled over. Half a mile later he came past and I just couldn't resist ... next thing we're doing 125mph on this bloody dual carriageway ring road and I'm a fair way behind him for safety's sake if nothing else but he's not leaving me.
Then he just accelerated a bit more and gained a bit ... not a lot, but enough. I could not, purely because it suddenly dawned on me what a mess of the car, me and a lot of other people I'd make if anything happened at that speed.
I'm sure the Chim was quicker through the rev range as we got up to those silly speeds as I was up his (huge) exhaust.
We had a sort of friendly wave as we parted at the next roundabout ...
I'm pleased with myself that I didn't get drawn into absolutely flooring it come what may (age-realted common sense I'm sure) ... and yet a bit at myself for getting 'dragged' into it (mid-life crisis the missus would say). I think in all honesty, he was just a bit more crazy than I am.
What I want to know is ... should a 4.0 HC Chim beat a big red Jap thing in a straight line. Yes or no.

I had a similar thing yesterday, As I entered a dual carriageway an impreza was up my ass so I thought Id floor it. to My amazment I only just managed to edge away. My view is either his car was one of the better ones i.e WRX or better. He'd chipped it himself, or my Griff 500 needs a good tune up. Do The estate versions come in super dooper versions of just standard turbo.

From what little I know about Subaru/Mistubishi Evo thingies, they can all, with chipping, boost valve mods, turbo mods etc., be made considerably more powerful than the factory intended.
In fact I've been told (by the owner of a rolling road I recently visited) that they can be, and often are, tuned way beyond sensible reliable limits, so you can be relatively smug about the fact that said estate will liekly have a blown engine shortly!
When I had a Griff 500 a few years ago I came up behind a Mitsi 3000GT in the outside lane of a dual carriageway with 2 Guys in it. (the car not the outside lane!) I wasn't close but all of a sudden his car has a little puff of smoke sits down and the bloke has floored it. I dropped 2 gears and destroy the poor sod down the inside laughing hysterically. As I go past I realise my mate is in the passenger seat! I stop at the roundabout for the Mitsi to catch up and be to be introduced to my mates bruv in his new car!!
ON THE OTHER HAND..........
When I first had my S3C not the quickest of TVR's I admit there was a guy in a brand spanking 535bmw type thing. And I dusted him good and proper especially when it came to the roundabouts! So let me think 40k on a box or £6500 grand on something of much more fun and greater scales on the thrillometer scale? No contest.
And (he says going on somewhat) my mate had one of those imported supra's with all sorts of turbo's and stuff and sheeite that thing was quick 700+ ponies, but he had thrown a mint at it. And after all................ it was still a jap blandmobile.
There we are then now i'm off me soap box i'll get another tinny.

A while ago I was just about to go through the dartford crossing barrier and noticed a 3000GT in the next lane... I thought fun time.. (in a griff), anyway the guy saw me and booted it as he pulled away. His barrier was up a few seconds before mine so I watched and heard him pull away just before me......
After a few impressive yards with flames out of his HUGE exhaust and sounding impressively loud his car literally went bang and stopped with smoke and oil everywhere I tottled past smiling politely..

My previous car to my S was a bog standard UK spec 5 door Impreza Turbo, in which I did 40K+ 'enthusiastic' miles. 0-60 in 5 ish and often (in Germany) an indicated 155, albeit getting something like 9mpg at those speeds! It would cruise comfortably at 130-140, and in the wet was untouchable.
Having said all that, the 'grin' factor I get from the TVR outweighs all of the Subaru's plus points, other than the fact that I could throw a ton of stuff in the back.
I for one will not be going back to a Japanese performance box.
Cheers

Comming back from a friends very late one night / early one morning I was followed very closely by an Escort Cosworth and on exiting a round about onto a dual carriageway I accelerated briskly in my F355 and he followed.
We got to 135mph ish and he could go no more so I put my foot down and left him and saw 165+ on the speedo briefly before crapping myself and backing off.
At the time it seemed soooo funny, afterwards, soo stupid, but I lived to tell.

Coming back from Santa Pod on Monday night, was in a line of veichles on the M25, all averaging 90-100MPH and had this git stuck right up my arse in his BMW.
When I got a clear bit of road ahead I floored it up to about 120MPH and pulled away quickly.
However 120 is never enough for some BMW's and he soon caught up with me. Couldn't be bothered to race, as I was tired and my head was still rattling around from the drag racing, so let him pass.
Glanced across as he overtook and saw his girlfriend giving me the old "I'm better than you and you'r car's too slow" look!
Cheeky bitch I thought, so gave em a lesson in speed!

Had a similar occurence last night with a black GTO. It had an exhaust I could fit both arms up!!!
I had promised myself I would drive to the TVR meeting sensibly last night but when he tried to lose me I couldn't help myself, after all I am driving TMS demo Cerbera 4.2 and with its ridiculously loud sports exhaust, I not only destroyed him with speed his eyes nearly popped out when he heard the noise go past him
Unlike my next door neighbour, who phoned me en-route to tell me I had set off four car alarms leaving our road

Mate of mine has an 'L' reg WRX (Jap Import, full 280 bhp monster). It can eat my 390 for brekkie. I wouldn't even try to follow him down a twisty road. He has added a few bits (sports pipe etc.) to it, but basically it's a standard car. It's a shame it's so inconspicuous, but maybe a good thing with the way it can shift!
However, it's 80 quid for a timing belt. Most engine parts are a nightmare to get hold of. Bolt-on goodies are expensive. The old Rover motor in my 390 is just being rebuilt at 102K miles; it will be effectively a new engine, at a cost of about 500 quid. All the parts were on a warehouse shelf one day and in my garage the next. He paid 10 grand (plus bank interest) for the WRX; I don't think he gets 3 times the performance for having spent 3 times the money I have! Not that you can 'really' use either of them on the road these days...
And if we park side by side in a car park, it's my 15-year-old car that turns heads and drops jaws...;-)

I have a FRIEND who was driving with a mate recently in his Chimaera and was being tailgated by a Renault Clio Williams (seriously!) - at most 2 car lengths behind at 50mph. As they were coming to a really long tunnel he backed off so that he could then hammer it through the tunnel and enjoy the roar and the Clio clearly thought it was his lucky day as he promptly 'flew' past, complete with huge exhaust making a noise.
My FRIEND then floored it in the Chimp and watched the Clio appear to go into reverse the gap was closed so quickly. The Chimp totally drowned out the noise from the Clio's petty exhaust and he was passed at a speed far too high to state here but well into three figures. How gutted was he!
Lovely!

I understand how easy it can be for the testosterone to take over - on a recent return from the dealers to pick up my Cerbie I was accompanied by a friend in another...we spotted a Modena Convertible barking away in the traffic in the outside lane. Naturally we ducked and dived to get behind him for a better view and succeeded - nonetheless I managed to sneak in front of him with said friend behind him - what do you know traffic clears out of the fast lane and the Modena is up my bumper - so all three of us floor it in a line and he cannot catch me but I wasnotlosing him either - look at the speedo and see 160 and think what am I doing - he pulled off and waved on exit nice car- shame he spent another 110 grand over mine for same performance though hahahahahaha- just thank god I was not nicked....stupid in retrospect
