The all round best car Triumph ever made - easy. It's the Triumph Acclaim.

Not the fastest car they made, or the best looking, nor the most sporty.

It was the best specced, most reliable and best built car to ever roll off the production lines though.

Sad, but true.

That's an interesting perspective. You're right, so long as you put reliability, and build quality above everything else. I don't see a lot of folks rushing to restore them however and so clearly there are qualities in the older Triumphs which transcend mere functional effectiveness. If only they'd been able to bundle all those qualities together.

Like I said - as a car it's the best they made. Won't be swapping my Spitfire (1930's seperate chassis construction & skuttle shake, engine designed in the 1950's with a pully nut that keeps trying to come undone, and about as waterproof as a fish) though ^_^

That said, the Avon Turbo Acclaims were meant to be quite good fun. 0-60 in 9.6s - the fastest accelerating car Triumph ever sold?

God this thread is depressing me

You sure that's right? 0-60 in 9.6? A TR5 or 6 PI is a lot faster than that straight out of the box.

TR5 = 8.1
TR6 = 8.5
Dolly Sprint = 8.3-8.7 depending on which road test.
Avon Turbo = 9.5

Bang for Buck, Dolly Sprint every time.

I reckon the best 2 seater is the TR7 v8. It's the fastest TR, handles the best and was cad designed so is probably the safest. It was over engineered to meet safety legislation that never came into force in the US. Plus it very up upgradeable if you want to go bonkers.

Best looking is the 7/8 convertible but that's a draw with the 4&5. I like the early bonnet lines.

Best Triumph.

Dolomite Sprint every time.

Even better when added with the extra 4 cylinder's.

Japanese Honda Acclaim alright if you like that sort of thing.
I refused to race them in under 1600 Banger's/Rookie Rod's.

That will upset a few people in the Triumph Club's.

I agree, plenty of space for a 2 seater, very timeless looks, mine stills looks modern today, excellent seating & handling. Damn safe even when clouted by securicor vans, with side impact protection bars etc. & my V8 is damn quick & handles well, better than a lot of modern warm hatches and regularly pees off BMW drivers who can't work it out! Mine has absolutely no badging yet since it's rebuild!

I've had a GT6 Mk2, 2.5 PI mk2, and currently have a TR7 V8, the GT6 was tiny but so smooth, handled reasonably well, 2.5 PI, Motor road test said, sumptuous family hot rod, a very apt description, Tr7 V8 most smiles per quid I've had for a long time, uprated suspenders, and it handles as well as any car I've had, apart from my Lotus Elan S3, that is.

In fact you're all wrong it has to be the TR2-3 for the all round impact it made on British motorsport when it was launched. Just about any clubman could buy one of these off the shelf and if they had any ability could start to win a few local races.

TR2-3 look ugly

I think its the "open mouth" look that grates:

Easily fixed, though, which Triumph did eventually get around to:

Not for nothing are those pics entitled "toad hall cars". That's where they live. That's their house.

I'm big fan of toads, I just prefer my cars not to look like our warty friends.

Loads of character though. I've discovered one of my neighbours has one. When he saw my 6, he ridiculed my roll-bar, and sneered at my seatbelts. Next day I asked his Mrs about this lack of safety features, and she told me that their son has "only gone through the windscreen once".

The TR3 IMHO is the best looking out of the cars. In this picture left to right TR3, TR2, TR3A.

The cheesy grin of the TR3A is just a bit too big for me but I would still buy a TR3A as the TR3 is a bit hard to find.

TR3 the best looking?!? It looks like a GT6 that a BMW driver hass rear-ended and pushed (hard) in to the car in front...

Driver thankfully OK, car not so well.

Ohhhh, that's a nasty smack to a lovely looking car. But wasn't it a bit of an extreme way to get the classic lines of a TR3 in an Indian making a 206 out of an ambassador (?) sort of style

TR5 without a doubt, but you try and source a Surrey Top (without which it is barely usable.)!
