looking at a herald convertible to use as a chilled out summertime surf car. Anyone here owned one and can point me as to what to look for in terms of what can prove a problem or expensive to sort? (aside from a chassis that has rusted through )

rear drive shaft joints can break and 2nd gear is a bit fragile. rust is allways repairable it is just a matter of how well repairs have been done.

make sure you get a genuine convertable with rounded top rear corners on the door glass not a home made special hood!

First a Rover and now a Triumph Herald - Shnozz, what an earth is happening, you're only mid-20s for heaven's sake?!

Just think of it as a Spitfire in drag, then... (would´ve inserted a smilie here if my keyboard had not played up).

well that thread was posted a year ago!

I like the Herald, as a beach cruiser its kinda cool in a Nick Berry/Heartbeat/surfer sort of way. Anyway, not enough parking for another car at the moment.

And thanks for reminding me of my age, since its the month of our birthdays.

Ah. That makes all the difference then. I used to rather fancy Wicksy!

Hello mate, long time no see. Yep, rare as hens teeth that arent rusted to . The panels might be cheap but availability isnt so brilliant

Nice Vitesse on ebay at the moment, but about 3 times what I was looking at paying!

Didnt know you had moved the porker on mate? Also didnt realise you had an RS6 and have had for a while. Very nice indeed, thinking of an S4 as my next everyday wagon to join the Tdi. Another toy coming to your cupboard anytime soon?

I can't see ebay from here. Company firewall blocks it but I'll have a look when I get back to the hotel tonight. I've wanted a Vitesse since I was 6 as my friends mum used to take us to primary school in one. It was white with a black stripe.
My uncle runs the TR owners club for Europe and has been bugging me to get something like that for 10 years now. He was most upset when I biroed a 'V'onto his baseball cap after turned up in the Tuscan
The RS6 is fantasic and as Rose and I are expecting a new addition to the family in a couple of weeks it made sense to move on from the 911. Sensible....Family....Motoring... That's what I keep telling myself.
Anyway, I'm in no hurry. If a ggod one comes up then I'll buy it.
There's a lovely blue herald convertable for sale in autotrader.co.uk but the downside is that it's over 200 miles away. Saying that, if you like it and fancy a run up there to get it just call.

I hope you know about Herald rear suspension before you buy one... Having owned one for a year or tow as my first car (still got it in storage) I'd be wary about buying one unless you really never want to dirve in a spirited manner.

The rear suspension can only be described as frightening. Same applies to an early Vitesse as well except they have more power so will get you into trouble quicker!

The rear suspension is unforgiving, but that doesn't mean it's frightening. It just means you should drive within its limits, as with any car, really.

Anyway, it's all easily sorted by replacing the rear spring with a later 'swing spring' from a Spitfire MkIV or 1500. Cheap, bolt-on fix.
