I'd endorse the Vitesse thing - they shift pretty well... I think the 2L six sounds better than the 2.5. Had a dream about my old GT6 the other day

Had two MK3 GT6s, lovely cars, wish i had kept second one I had. 2.0 engine was much smoother than 2.5 in TR6 etc. Gearbox major problem on all those cars though.

Alternatively, how about a Sunbeam Tiger

£20k? really, I was expecting to be more like £12k.

12k will get you a useable Mk1 but it's 20k+ for a MkII (lot less made)

snozz,

I used to have one for a while. Aside from chassis rust the only problem was a warped head something to do with a cast iron block and an alloy head I seem to remember. The local kids used to open the drivers door with a lollipop stick too. Cracking little car to drive though and very easy to work on.

P.S. It was 20 years ago though...

Still got a Herald Estate, my mate has a GT6 and a Spit and my father has multiple 2.5PIs and a Vitesse...
Grew up on Triumphs and can REALLY vouch for the amount of rust! My Herald has only 1 original out rigger and is currently in a barn suffering from the further effects of tin worm.

Don't get a Herald if you like a car that handles, the rear suspension is plain scary when you push it (e.g. when you need it to get you out of trouble). Same goes for a Mk1 Vitesse except it is worse due to the additional power. Mk2 Vitesse is the one to go for, power and decent rear suspension, if a bit under geared for cruising.

Try:

www.tssc.org.uk

All you ever wanted to know and lots that you didn't!

You should be able to pick up a good runner for well under a grand, they are so easy to keep on the road in terms of maintenance and repair, the parts are nearly all available for next day deliver from many sources such as www.canleyclassics.com or www.rimmerbros.co.uk

All the 'nasty' characteristics of swing spring rear axle and other handeling traits can easily be ironed out thanks to people like TriumphTune (Moss), personally I find that the rear spring adds to the skill of driving a RWD car with no weight over the axle!

As for insurance, if you joing TSSC then Footman James do a TSSC policy, you can expect to pay around £100-£150 for a fully comp unlimited mileage policy. My extensively modified Spitfire 1500 was insured with all mods declared and it still only cost me £160!

Shoot me a mail if you want any more info, I run the Canturbury area of the TSSC and am also a Director of the club.
