Guess what? Exit from float chamber blocked with what looks like an old seal. Thing is I had already fished out an old seal and there's only supposed to be one in there. So someone must've done some work on this carb before and left an old seal in there which had disintegrated.

So, completely reset carbs, balanced, reset mixture, idle speed etc and now running beautifully with new coil, leads, plugs and accuspark! Hasn't run so well in a long time so hopefully the new jets will solve my hot running problems. I can't test drive it unfortunately because I don't have an MOT and the 40 year exemption doesn't apply here because we have no functioning regional government to sign off on the legislative change... Grrrr...

So thanks J.// for that final suggestion. Should have looked there earlier...

Next task is to fit the overdrive setup I've had waiting to go in for several years.

And that would be //j17!

Can you give us any insight into the meaning (if any) behind your username??

Cheers,

Al.

Not that interesting. I've used the name "Mjit" all over the Internet since the mid-90s. At a guess it was already taken, too short, or something when I joined PH so went for "/\/\j17"...and then some years back there was a back-end change at PH which I'd guess invloved moving everyone from one Db to another, and rather than do a proper 'escape' the developer did a lazy 'remove' on special characters so I lost my "\"s and became "//j17".

Mjit comes from my initials and a non-gender "it" - and playing on the fact I'm rarely troubled by low door frames.

Well I thank you and others whatever the origins!

I'll call you by your original Mjit handle in future.

Mine is rather predictable given my interest in 911s, although I also use it on land-rover forums which must confuse people a bit...

And for a final, final update...

Car was sputtering like mad yesterday having been on a 30 minute blast, then left it for 10 mins before taking off again. 26 degrees and back to the original underlying problem of engine dying under load.

Luckily this time I had a brand new accuspark coil in the boot - swapped over on the side of the road and off she went!

So I've changed carb jets, leads, plugs and fitting electronic points but it looks like it was the coil all this time but there was no way to test this until hot running conditions...

At least it now seems to be sorted.
