My car (early TVR wedge) has developed a rattle from the top end of the column and I may need to have it replaced - Rimmer Bros don't have it listed so aside from eBay does anyone know a good source?

I believe I need a US spec one as the ignition key is on the right (are they usually on the left on UK spec columns?)

The steering locks changed at around 1978 so should be right for your car. The rattle in the column means adjustment (straight forward) is needed not a new column ... usually. This is done by looking on the shaft under the dash and there is clamp near the bulkhead. This is squareish with two bolts on one side and a lock nut on the other.

Adjustment is done by undoing the locknut and pulling the shaft up then retightening which should remove slack and rattle. A good test before you start is to pull on the steering wheel and if you have play then it does need adjustment. It is also worth checking the bush in the bulkhead where the shaft passes through as these fall apart over time and need replacement (cheap) and cause similar issues.

I very much doubt you need a new column. If you are not confident please get a mechanic to help you, I am not responsible for mistakes this is only my advice from experience!

Thanks - I have bought a couple of replacement bushes as the problem seems to be within the column and not related to mounting. I just have to work out how to fit them.

I'd get a suitably experienced garage to do it if you're not sure. I've changed the steering column bushes a couple of times on my TR GT6 etc and whilst not complicated in theory it is a bit of a ball-ache if you don't have the right tools or technique. (ie I had to buy a new column tube after my first attempt paperbag and that was with everything on the bench. )

I'm keeping the bushes in the glovebox until the next service!
