I'm giving some very serious thought to getting a proper grown up Triumph.

I love the spitfire .... but we all know they have big shortcomings.

My thoughts, at the moment, are either a TR4 or TR6. (Don't mean to upset anyone, but the TR5 just doesn't seem quite right to my eyes).

So, without wanting to sound like I'm trolling too much, can any owners give me the plusses and minusses for each and what to be careful of when viewing prospective cars. Also, pi or not pi ... is that a question?

Thanks

I had a look at a Tr6 but they are either rough or Expensive or both.
so I wanted a convertible and my wife wanted me to get 4 seats.
so I bought a Herald Convertible as it's not expensive.
but its slow .

What shortcomings are you referring to?

If it's power, well get a GT6 with a good chassis and a rusted out body. 6 bolts later you have a 6-cylinder, 2 litre Spitfire.

If it's anything around water-proofness/modern reliability... well no TR will help with that with the possible exception of th TR7.

Yes, it's underpowered. It's also hardly got the best roof (not that it ever gets to see rain). I find the offset pedals awkward on a run anything longer than an hour. There's a few other niggles ... but most of them bring a smile until they really get annoying (long runs).

Basically, I was after owners' opinions on the TR4 and 6 ... I just think they're more 'grown up' and I reckon I'd like to get one or the other. Tha's all.

I have a Spitfire and a TR. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. The Spitfire is light, low, beautiful to many people's eyes, costs peanuts to run and it's about the easiest car in the world to work on. But it's clearly a budget sports car, not particularly powerful in standard tune, nor very fast and not engineered from the start to do any serious racing or rallying. It's a car that is aimed at the broadest possible market, both male and female.
The TR, on the other hand, is a different beast altogether. It's powerful for its day, brash, faster, uses more fuel, is better engineered, more expensive to run, not as easy to work on and mainly aimed at males oozing testosterone.

I love 'em both. The Spitfire for summer trips with the wife and commuting to work on sunny days - and the TR3A for classic rallies and blowing away the cobwebs on a quiet Sunday morning. driving

Hi,new to your site because I have been looking at buying a Ferrari 348 and needed advice. I have had my TR6 for ages, 150 BHP, Sapphire blue with 9k miles. You get a lot for the money, very usable allways pulls the crowds. Buy the best you can afford 150BHP, PI with overdrive.Get one with good history and photos of restoration, matched engine & chassis numbers, known to the owners club etc. TR Register is a great place for help loads of knowledge and good people.

Be carefull with the colour as there are some strange ones, the story goes that the wife of the then chairman of Triumph chose the colours and so there are a number of pastel shades etc. The dark blues are more sought after and fetch a premium.

The TR6 was aknowledged as the last true British sportscar, quick, noisy (will definitley wake people up) and a handfull to drive, you will love it.

I hope I dont need to think about selling mine to buy the Ferrari.

Good Look

For the first time I've considered flogging my TR6, to help fund a 308gtb. Don't think the wife will let me though.

Yertis, the wife spoils all our fun. I dont tell her until its to late and then it only cost half of what it actually did, well they do it with shoes and clothes.

Had a TR6 for the last 4 years - late model 125bhp PI and it's brill. The grin factor is huge - smooth power and pulls like a train. Best advice is spend as much as you can afford buying a good 'un (I'd say the same for any triumph). It'll save you money in the long run. I paid £8k for mine and it's nowhere near as good as the one barefoot is selling above (which makes that an abosulte bargain in my opinion). Been to Le-Mans twice now in mine.

I can't get the hang of this on-line photo hosting and linking thing so have a look at
www.tssc-manc.34sp.com/ - Mine's the red TR6. If you are interested I keep a log of the running costs in my profile. So far on average just over £1k per year.

TR4 not 4a is better drive - have to spend alot to get the indy rear ends working well - handle better than 6.

But 6's sound alot better - and can be tuned to go faster at a more moderate cost (talking road cars here).

I love an drive both!
