Police stinger and run flat tyres?
Discussion
Run-flats work by having stiff enough side-walls to support the vehicle weight, I don't see how a stinger would be any different to any other puncture. However, flat run-flats are only rated for about 40mph (maybe 50 these days, not sure); if you tried running away from the police on them, specifically trying to put any cornering force through them, I suspect they'd fall to bits relatively quickly.

They may only be rated to 50 mph however (in error) we ran the wife's X5 quite a few miles at speeds well over 50mph on a deflated run-flat with little consequence and little obvious impact on the cornering. kambites said:
Interesting, I assumed the side-wall would just bend over if you tried to put serious cornering loads through them.
I guess so. We were on holiday with kids etc so wasn't really pressing on. I could kind of tell that something wasn't totally right with the way the car was driving but it was a minor difference. djohnson said:

So what happens when the Police try to stop a tearaway car wearing run flat boots using stinger?
Does the stinger inflict sufficient damage that the boots fail?
Perhaps it just takes longer?
i was under the impression that the latest ones are designed to wrap themselves round the tyre / wheel and jam it specifically as you may have run flats on.Does the stinger inflict sufficient damage that the boots fail?

According to Magnum Spike! (tm) a stinger won't stop run flats. But Magnum Spike! (tm) with its high density spikes will rip the sidewalls causing the tyre to fail.

I run 205/55/16 I think.
I think there would be a big difference in feel between this size and a 245/40/18 at a guess. A large profile would be much weaker I would expect.uk_vette said:
So runflats may or maynot stll keep you mobile, but at a reduced speed.
I would like to throw another tyre into the equasion.
What if it wasa substantial 4x4, with big, off road type reinforced tyres.
How would the stinger be able to penetrate the shear strength of the tyre?
vette
i imagine it would have to be a full on off road tyre to beat one or at least have a chance of beating one. the spikes look fairly meaty and long from what i have seen on telly.I would like to throw another tyre into the equasion.

i doubt the road biased tyres on my discovery (only for the mot, promise) would survive, the coopers i am thinking about may at least get me down the road, i think you would need some insa extreme types to annoy the BiB as they may have to chase you for a while.
mind if you have stolen a range rover you can use it without wheels
