Does anyone have any experience/views on the above please? It's pretty expensive and I'm wondering whether it's worth paying more than the average. Thanks.

How much are you being asked to have your wheels aligned? Also what car have you got to be aligned? A Hunter wheel aligner is very good but is only as good as the tech using it.

I've not got a direct quote, but understand that it's about £80-100 for mine (RS4), whereas a 'normal' alignment is about £40 locally.

The equipment is only any use if the operator knows how to use it !!!!

Most places over here are completely clueless, even with equipment well into 5 figures !

I know of plenty of people who have paid their money, and drove off with the steering wheel not even straight anymore !

Right an Audi will have if I remember right has camber and toe adjustment on the rear and toe on the front. Also the steering angle sensor may need resetting after the alignment has been performed. This should all be possible on the hunter system but check the steering sensor can be recalibrated as not all Hunter systems are the same. I doubt for £40 on a standard system you would get all the angles checked and adjusted. Ask how many primary angles are checked at the initial assessment if it's less than 12 then it's not a full four wheel alignment and £40 may be money down the drain if something that is not checked is the cause of vehicle stability or tyre wear. Also a lot of proper four wheel alignment charge per adjustment so at worst it may cost £100.00 but if not everything needs adjusting it could be a lot less. A full Hunter aligned and lift could cost more than £40k to install so even if it is £100 to adjust providing its with a good tech it's not as bad as it sounds.

I'm also interested in this for an R129 Merc SL. Can anyone recommend a midlands operator?

That's my local garage smile

I've used them since we came here, they're helpful and very professional in their work. It's a small place but don't let that put you off, it's the guys with the spanners that are really important and they handle quite a range from classics to modern rally/trackday cars.

Best 'mod' I've ever done on my cars, it completely transformed the handling on the ST and 123d (both of which were some way out). Interestingly the 328 was checked when I bought it and found to be pretty much spot on already.

I'd do this on every car I own from now on. Not only is the handling better but it decreased tyre wear too. Important you have someone who knows what they're doing (I use Discount Tyres in Worthing).

Could not agree more. It never ceases to amaze me the money people will spend on suspension and not get it set up. Having set up many race machines tyres make the biggest difference then a good geo is a close second.

Does this normally check bump steer?

A four wheel alignment would not normally measure bump steer. They may be able to perform bump steer measurements but expect this at extra cost as it will take extra time to performer. I have heard of several hundred pounds for this sort of in depth alignment being performed. This is only really required if the car has been lowered and the owner actually wants the car to handle better rather than just look cool

I'm wanting my AP1 S2k doing soon as it's well overdue, but I'm having trouble finding any recommendations in the Manchester area. Anyone know of anywhere that they would recommend?
