Does Nathan Roe from the express just copy and paste the same story every September?

Yes. He's a standing joke in the seasonal Snow threads.

Just ordered 4 Michelin Cross Climate for my XC90 235 60 R18. ATS claim they’ll take 9 days to arrive.... £160 each and with some 4 wheel tracking £686 all in.

That's why I love my small crappy unfashionable 16" on my 3 series, Riken Snow times 205/55/16 £40 each smile

Thanks for the replies to my post, I'm going to opt for the Bridgestone Weather Control A005's.

I know they're a bit of an unknown in the fact they've only been out since May but from the limited reviews I've seen, they seem very good and are £25 a tyre cheap than the Michelin Crossclimates for the size I require. They also have the same A rating for wet weather grip.

The £100 saved on all four tyres can go towards some winter car prep - new/better bulbs which I've been meaning to do, along with a tow rope and some other bits and bobs. (A chap in his Landie offered me a tow when I got stuck in the snow at the beginning of the year and I've always wanted to return the favour to a fellow motorist)

Now watch as we have a very mild Winter with no snow in sight hehe

I rescued a Volvo XC90 last year in my 3 series, he couldn't believe his eyes when I rolled up next to him squirming away smile gave him a a well informed chat on the way home on how 4WD is useless without proper tyres...

The Michelin Energy tyres on my Jazz could do with replacing and I'm thinking of going toward a more all season type tyre because they're quite poor in the wet and almost useless in a light dusting of snow.

Do the winter tyre beards have any recommendations and will there be much of an economy penalty?
On a Jazz I'd go for an all season.

Michelin Cross Climate seem to be current tyre of choice but have rather limited size and I think they aren't as good as the price promises. Goodyear Vector 4 season or Vredestein Quatrac would be my choice and are both well rated from owners.

I don't know any proper test covering these for economy but my gut says the Michelin would be slightly better for economy than the other 2 because it's a newer design but I doubt there is a significant difference unless you hypermile a lot.
Just gone for some Bridgestone A005s to be fitted next week. Brand new tyre, only released in May, and come in plenty of sizes, more so than the CCs.

In Bridgestones own tests, they appear to outperform to CCs especially on wet performance (you'd expect Bridgestone to say that though!) which for me living in the southeast is probably more important than outright snow performance but we'll see how they perform once on.

On a side note, was talking to the tyre chappie and he was saying that more and more people are turning to all season and winter tyres and stuff is already on back order as a lot of people were caught out last year and as their summers are wearing out, they're now turning to all seasons.
Funnily enough I had some Bridgestone a005's fitted to my wifes Zafira yesterday, she isnt an overly confident driver and always worries about getting stuck with a car full of other peoples kids (she's a childminder). She doesnt do enough miles to warrant having 2 sets of wheels/tyres for the car so these seem a reasonable compromise. And at just under £300 for 4 not bad value either

Im not sure if its applicable on here, but Ive recently purchased some Michelin Cross climates for a Vauxhall Astra and I'm hoping they'll be decent come winter time. I cant be arsed especially within the UK with the whole 2 sets of tyres so lets see. Anyone interested, size is 205 R16, so nothing special.

On another note, on my old car, I had BF goodrich's All season G grip tyres and they were surprisingly quite good over the last couple of years of the cars life. Tried to source another set for this new car, but couldnt find a decent price and then found the cross climates on offer with Black Circles.

The CrossClimate doesn't have any problems with snow, it's surprisingly capable smile

As all season / winter tyres wear below 3mm they can get to the point where they match summer tyres in the dry and wet. Sadly this also means their snow and ice performances drop to near summer tyre levels.

It's the Express not 'the news'. No one reads, or believes it.

Except you hehe

I'm spewing - I've a 66 plate E class coupe with 235/35/19 fronts and 255/30/19 rears. I've a set of used for 5 months winters and a set of 1000 miles old summers (I've been motorbiking all summer) which I'll be swapping off before the car gets handed back in December with the original tyres refitted (still decent tread on them but I'm not giving it back with brand new rubber on).

I was assuming - oh, what a fool - that the new model E class coupe would have the same sized tyres and so I'd be quids in and not need new ones at all. But no - the new one has a whoppingly unnecessary 245 front 275 rear combination. FFS! mad

Looking for a set of winter tyres and wheels for an Audi A5. The description of my wheels indicate that they have direct tire pressure monitoring system. Does it mean every wheel has a sensor? I would prefer to just have a set of wheels and swap tires every season but from reading this thread it seems it is not really recommended to have just one set of wheels.

The sensor is in the valve on each wheel. Check if your valves look like screw in metal jobs rather than the usual rubbery ones. They are around £120 a set (aftermarket), much more from your friendly Audi parts counter!

Is a new A5? Mine doesn’t have sensors in the wheels, it uses the ABS system but it’s a Mk 1.

It is a 2018 Coupe. I think it uses the ABS system. Having issues trying to upload a picture of it. The order form indicates that the wheels are 18” 8.5J. Could I still fit 18” 8J wheels?

Those look like standard valves so I suspect it works off the ABS as you say. That's saved you some money! What does that handbook/door jamb sticker say is the recommended size for winter wheels? Use that.

I had a look at the handbook as well as the info on the door, no information of correct size of wheels just to please contact a local Audi dealer to verify the correct wheels have been purchased. I did give them a call last week and still waiting for a reply.
