I ended up with Goodyear vector Gen 3 tyres, hopefully they will cope fine with the wet winters we have, I doubt they see any snow sadly.
Consistently good reviews and in test. These will be going on my car this month.Just ordered a set of Vredestein Wintrac Pro again. I was looking to change to something higher up the table but for our new car (M340i touring) its the only tyre I can get in both front/rear sizes and a W or Y speed rating. I'm not doing over 150mph in the dry let alone on winters but I didn't want a technical infringement on the insurance policy. Does seem strange that the big boys don't do those speed ratings.
We had them on our previous F-Pace and they were great. Good to see Jon praising them still in his latest test despite the design age (and on a 3-series too). They're cracking value as well.

There's often a winter tyre spec for a specific car, which usually comes with a lower speed rating IME We had them on our previous F-Pace and they were great. Good to see Jon praising them still in his latest test despite the design age (and on a 3-series too). They're cracking value as well.
All this talk of a technical infringement got me worried because the winters I have are
- Slightly narrower at the rear (235 vs 245)
- Lower speed rated (V/149mph vs ZR)
I rang my insurer (Axa) and said “just want to check if this counts as a modification, and to inform you I’ve done this”. Was transparent about the changes above. Lady on the phone said “absolutely fine and I’ll note it on the policy”.
So now I’ve got a recorded phone call to lean on in the unlikely event they ever were to try and wriggle out of a claim on this basis.

Had Wintrac Extremes on a new Hilux, snow grip even in 2WD was a given no surprises there but wet road grip was far better than expected, transformed from a tail happy beast (a too fierce rear LCD) into a safe handling vehicle, so good were they had a job prising the truck out of wifeys hands long enough to slip the summer set back on.We had them on our previous F-Pace and they were great. OE Pirellis were too skittish on anything other than a bone dry road and nothing to write home about even in the dry, got shot of those at 1000 miles.

4C and ice warning just came up on car. It's quite nippy!
Cars were frozen this morning and there was a dusting of snow on the hills over the weekend so that's prompted me to start looking at new winter/all-season options for the old A6 to replace the Nokians which were binned at the start of spring. Pablo16v said:

I was really pleased with how well my Michelin Cross Climate 2s worked in the snow last year. It was the first time I had used all seasons as opposed to winter tyres and it was my big worry that come the snow they wouldn't be up to much. Great not having to worry about changing them too.Speed 3 said:

The speed rating is as much to do with the torque available as it has to do with high speed. We had them on our previous F-Pace and they were great. Good to see Jon praising them still in his latest test despite the design age (and on a 3-series too). They're cracking value as well.
My winters will be going on when the clocks change I’d imagine, in spite of a frost this morning. If the temps stay low I’ll swap earlier, mind. Goodyear Ultragrip Performance Gen 1 and Performance Plus in 225/45/17. They’ve been good so far, and we’re looking to go skiing in March and taking the car.
I'm looking at some all seasons 265/40/21 105Y, but there doesn't seem to be a wide selection so may opt for the new Continental AllSeasonContact2

Great not having to worry about changing them too.Woke up today with it 0.5 degrees, without having paid attention. I was going to replace my winters this year in my daily drive but considering moving to all seasons instead. Is there a sensible thread on this? I don't currently have to cope with anything particularly exciting generally, but it also has to be much better than a southerner - basically if it will cope with a rwd car on untreated roads on the pennines in the depths of winter it'll be fine. But I'd also like to know that if I economise like this and switch from PS4s there won't be too much of a downgrade in the dry? Maybe there's already a miracle compound - the PS4s must be a few years old by now - that will be almost as good?

I believe that this is the thread you’re looking for. Michelin Cc2 have a good rep but they aren’t going to trouble performance summer tyres. Jon’s website is a good and quick source of info, too.
My wife's car is on CCs (not sure if CC2s) but it's also a Kia Picanto. They seem decent enough to me in the context of that vehicle - so decent I was asking this question - but if there are significant differences I'll keep with the Winter/Summer pattern. Who is Jon and what is his website? I'm sorry if this is answered previously. He’s a PHer and active on this thread. He also is responsible for tyrereviews.co.uk

Ah grand yeah I've seen that site - tbh I was going to this thread first before checking as I'm just sticking out my "tentacles" so to speak - but will take a looksie afterwards - I've seen a video on it not long ago at all about a mix between budgets, remoulds, and... something... which was not at all surprising.
