Has anyone run different brands of winters front to rear?

Might be tricky for me to get matching Hankooks in the sizes I’m after unless using mytyres but the reviews on trustpilot suggest they’re not the best regarding deliveries.
I wouldn't even do that with summers yikes

I haven't, but I would, without hesitation.

It's always good to have a variety of answers.

When I were a lad, I never had 4 matching tyres on my car, often all 4 were different brands. I now would always have matching axle sets as a minimum, I would not mix summer with winter, but I am about to have all-season on one axle and winters on the other yikes I want to change over to all season, but only 2 of the winters are worn. I will report back if I die. My thinking is the good all seasons are so close to winters now, it won’t be an issue.

your thinking will be right only exception may be a Subaru and even then it's not a safety issue but a mechanical one.

I put all seasons (fairly chunky ones) on my Golf Alltrack at the start of the summer. On the rear only as I moved the then rear(worn summer) tyres to the front to wear them down before winter and fitting another two allseasons.

I fitted the further two all seasons in Nov so I now have a set. I haven't come close to dying yet.

Furthermore I fitted Davanti All Seasons and the PH collective smirked and were convinced I'd die in a ditch. They are fine.

I'm doing around 15000m per month on rural roads some of them fairly open and fast plus many dirty backroads.

I suspect you will find nobody said you will die in a ditch, but many will have pointed out that it is the time that you need the difference between bad tyres & good tyres and don't have it is the time you will likely regret the choice in one way or another.

It's hardly a yikes!

It's not uncommon with summer tyres, different tyres across the same axle is a no no but I was more curious with winter tyres regarding the obviously limited grip conditions they perform well in.

It's not like mixing summers and winters, which is worryingly common looking at some cars in my work car park.

It is to me wink

Only thing in contact with the road is the tyres - matching tyres all round for me is essential - I've bought new to me cars and changed all four tyres in the past if missmatched brands etc.

What other people do doesn't impact me - most people just buy the cheapest black and round rubber thing whenever they have one that has canvas showing at best or metal strands poking out at worst!!!!

Indeed. Even when I put all seasons on my wife's car I ditched a half worn pair rather than mix summers and all seasons.

Been there, done that.

Only last month I looked at an ad for a car that I might have been interested in & saw 4 pics of (different) what were advertised as "recent tyres" my only thought was to factor in the price of 4 new good matched tyres before even thinking about going to see it.

Seeing that immediately scrubs the car from any further consideration for me, what else do they do, fit the odd single new (or used) shocker brake pad or disc if one falls off.

FWIW our Jon did a wet test with summer tyres on an M2 that didn't show a huge difference in doing this with premium tyres but it was unsurprisingly extremely hairy with crap tyres on the back.

Will dig out the video.

There were distinct differences between the performance with a matched set and unmatched sets even before he put ditch finders on the back......

I therefore rest my case for the yikes

hehe

You must be an exceptionally nervous driver if that's what you take from what he said regarding mixing those UHP Contintentals and Michelins.

Regardless it's a moot point, I managed to get the matching tyres I wanted in what is seemingly a fairly awkward size to match.

I have no idea how you draw that conclusion but hey ho

Congrats on getting a matched set - one of my cars I can no longer get a matched set of summer tyres in OE sizes let alone winters in any decent make at all - rears are no longer sold - it’s not like it’s pre war or anything it’s a 4 door saloon built in 1991

Accelerating ‘enthusiastically’ up a motorway ramp slip road at nationals the other morning saw my tyres squirming a little under load — I was a little surprised. Nothing dramatic, but notable. Tyres are dedicated winters Pilot Sport Alpin in excellent condition.

Highly likely as the road was damp and on a slip road usually greasy and rubbery.

Plus there's deeper (and or more open) tread blocks on the tyres which do flex.

In the E500 (so RWD)?

As has been said, not surprising.

Bit more surprising if it was 4WD FFRR.

Yes, in the E500 (RWD).
