For one reason and another we haven’t use our focus for about seven weeks. Last time we did it was pouring of rain and I just left the handbrake on obviously a mistake. The back passenger side wheel refused to move despite some quite aggressive clutch action. I decided to set off down the drive and see what would happen as I figured the weight of the car is better than me trying to do it myself with some spanners. After about 5 feet of dragging there was a huge clang and the car was fine. It drives absolutely fine with no noises at all and the handbrake works as it should do. does anybody think there might be some damage done I think myself probably not but happy to take advice.

I've heard of pads separating from the backing plate in these situations, maybe worth checking.

Perfectly normal. Just the pads binding to the disks a bit.

If you're parking up for a while and can get away with it, park in gear with handbrake off.

No damage, just the rear pads (more likely shoes) freeing off.

I believe (I may be wrong), they are drum-in-hat. That is, brake shoes for parking brake inside a disc for service brake. You should be able to drive off, may be a clunk, as they are freed.

Next time worth rocking backwards and forwards rather than going straight for a drag

Not brilliant brake design/specification but it can happen. My old Evora used to stick the fronts quite regularly, on one occasion it locked on both fronts on my parents gravel drive.

Managed to free one off so I could steer but the other didn’t break free until I got to the cobble gate threshold. The old man was not impressed with the state of the drive!!

As has been said, just be aware of any changes in the feel of the handbrake in case a shoe has come away from its backing. If it keeps happening it’s worth checking that the handbrake isn’t dragging as excess heat can promote it.

Just looked it is indeed drums on the back, feel slightly ashamed that I didn't know that and feel like I should hand in my piston heads card. Just assumed a modern ish high spec (titanium) focus would be discs all round
