It could be a number of things, have the tyre pressures been regularly checked? If those were right then the most likely cause of inner shoulder wear on both front tyres would be excessive toe-in which yes could be sorted by an alignment.
ETA: but also, what tyres are they? Some tyres just wear horribly even if the alignment is within spec.

It could be down to the torque and weight of the diesel. I've had C-Max and Focus diesels and even with wheel alignments suspension checks, steering checks after around 12,000 miles the inner tread always began to wear. Once it starts it happens quickly. If it happens on new tyres within a few thousand miles then there might be a problem.
You could get it tracked and it will be within the tolerances, then the first speed hump or pot hole you go over knocks it out.
Are you one of those drivers that goes over the middle of those square speed humps or do you go over alternate sides? That can cause the problem too.
