Thoughts on this tyre
Discussion
I hit a pothole today with my front nearside tyre, slowing to enter a garden centre so not going fast. Was a bit of a thump so checked the wheel after I got home. The wheel is unmarked but there is a small bulge on the tyre wall and what looks like a hole in the side wall top layer. Will this need a new tyre? It's a runflat P zero on a BMW 440i.
Yeah that's damaged the structure of the sidewall, it's going to fail at some point; it's probably not going to blow up on the way to the tyre fitters but I'd get it replaced ASAP and keep a very close eye on it until you do. Looking at how close the damage is to the rim, you were pretty lucky not to damage that too!
Surprised if you wouldn't hear it thrumming away if you tried to do any sort of motorway speed on it...
I had a similar oopsie driving up the ramp from the le shuttle platform in France; 5ish mph, same as everyone else, in a little MG with 40-section tyres (so not a 3-tonne beast on 20-profiles doing 50 through a pothole). Massive bang as I drove over what looked like a join between two sections of concrete and the tyre had gone a bit out of round. Spare wheel on, and when I had the tyre replaced they said it was possibly a steel cord snapping inside the tyre.

I thought it was toast but confirmation is welcome. The tyre isn't deflated and no warning on TPMS. I was travelling slowly so that's probably just as well. I'm surprised the wheel is unmarked, but I'll get it checked when the tyre is off. Now I have to look for replacements for the front. I'll probably take the opportunity to get rid of the runflats. Maybe Michelin PS4 or Goodyear Eagle F1.
