Track Day only Pads - Which to choose?

Hi Guys,

I'm sure this has been covered a thousand times before, but can't find a recent thread. I have a 2012 Clio RS200 track car and looking for recommendations for decent race pads. Car will be used sparingly on the road, so track performance is more key.

Any help would be appreciated.

You may get better advice from an owners' club, but unless/until you know better, I'd start with standard road pads and see whether you start running into any overheating problems. You can get pads with a higher temperature rating, but there's always a trade-off with some other aspect of the performance.

As said, you are likely to need hotter range pads for track days, that the ordinary road pads. Every manufacturer offers pads in three ranges, usually road , fast road and race. Mintex for example have their 1144, 1155 and 1166 pads.

'Hotter' pads tend to be rather poor in stopping you when cold, straight out of the garage so can be a problem as you drive out and want to stop at the first junction. I have 1155s on my road/race car and have found them to be an excellent compromise, NEVER fading on track but stopping me adequately when cold.

Even Mintex offer a lot more pad types than that, but definitely get advice from people using under the same conditions etc. I just got some F4R to replace the 1155's I had. Not sued them yet though
Have 1144's for in my other car.
They're just generally decent value.

Not got specific experience of your car but previous good TD pads for me have been:

Ferodo DS UNO.
Ferodo DS 1.11.
Pagid RS29

You need to see what is available in your required pad & take it from there.

I use Ferodo DS2500's on my Cayman GTS.

Good bite from cold, never really got them to vary when hot - including a track day at Spa, sprints etc. Also used them on my Golf mk7.5 R with great results. Did Spa, Nordschleif and the Nurburgring F1 circuit over a two day jaunt, again felt unburstable. No fade, minimal brake dust residue, kind to the discs and good longevity.

As an aside, back when I was doing tarmac stage rallies, Mintex used to to give me unlimited pads when they developed carbon metallic pads.On that basis, I feel I have the experience to comment on brake pads...

Great bite from cold. Don’t wear your discs aggressively. Easy to modulate.
